The last time Philipp Bargfrede wore the Werder shirt in a game was last January. The away match at Schalke 04 finished 3-1, but not in Werder’s favour. Bargfrede would have clearly also loved to have played in Sunday’s match against the Royal Blues. However appearing in the Schalke game, which ended in the same result as Bargfrede’s last match for Werder in January, would have been a little too early for him to make his comeback. But the 27-year-old returned to first team training one day later and participated in part of the session with his teammates. Bargfrede will most likely be in action on Friday in the friendly match against VfL Osnabrück, which will be a chance for him to play under competitive conditions. “We’ll see what happens in the next few training sessions but I think that I’ll be able to play,” ‘Bargi’ told WERDER.DE.

It will not be the first time that Bargfrede has had to come back from injury. The holding midfielder has had to battle with injuries on many occasions in the past, but he continues to put the work in to regain his place in the Green-Whites starting XI. Yet what actually is it that inspires Philipp Bargfrede to keep going? Having had a total of seven operations on his knee, rehabilitation training is nothing new for the midfielder, but it is also something that Bargfrede wants to see the back of. “Rehabilitation training is obviously sometimes not fun, above all because you are always alone, which doesn’t make it easy,” admits Bargfrede. He always tries to be positive and also knows why he is putting all the work in. He explains that “my desire has always been to get back to where I was before.”

Monitoring his condition and looking to regain his match fitness is nothing new for Bargfrede. However he has proven while doing this, that he does not need long to get back into the swing of things. “You build the basic framework that you need when you are in rehab. If the rehabilitation is done sensibly, then I won’t have to do anything particularly onerous myself in order to be able to get back to my best on the pitch,” he revealed.

As a result, Philipp Bargfrede will have the chance to return to action in peak condition. But there is one part of him in particular that has to be able to cope, and that is his knee. Having had meniscal surgery many times, the 27-year-old knows that further complications to his knee ligaments in the future may arise. But the loyal Werder man is not worried, nor does he feel the need to hold back. He himself acknowledges that getting anxious about things would be far from beneficial. “If I were to start worrying in my head every time I go in for a tackle or in any other situations during a game, then I wouldn’t be able to carry on playing the way I like to.”

Bargfrede is not the only one who is itching to return to first-team action. His teammates and head coach Alexander Nouri are delighted that somebody who according to Nouri is “aggressive in winning the ball back and a very good footballer”, will be able to provide more support for the team’s defensive line. The team will also benefit from the return of forwards Max Kruse and Claudio Pizarro, who have both recovered from their injuries.”Everybody knows how valuable Philipp is for this club. We are looking forward to every minute that he will now be able to spend with us on the training field,” Nouri said on Wednesday afternoon. Hopefully Bargfrede will have the excitement of returning to action in the stadium as soon as possible.
