Borussia Dortmund manager Thomas Tuchel was one of the first to find the right words to describe the game between his side and SV Werder. A “wild ride” and a “real strain on the nerves”, he proclaimed at the press conference, after his team had secured a 4-3 victory at home over SVW. It was a game that saw Werder take the lead twice and get so close to their dream of qualifying for the Europa League. “Once again, my lads gave everything they had today,” confirmed Werder manager Alexander Nouri. In the end, individual class and two penalties decided the game, after 90 minutes of back and forth action.

The manner of the defeat saw many Green-Whites deeply disappointed and no one was really in the mood the enjoy the fact the team have played an incredible second half of the season. WERDER.DE caught up with those involved in the dramatic 4-3 loss to BVB.

On the game:

Fin Bartels: “We are obviously disappointed. However, if we take a step back from everything, we will be able to take positives from our second half of the campaign, but at the moment we are more disappointed. We once again came back into the game and proved great spirit. It’s a shame that it didn’t pay off.”

Zlatko Junuzovic: “I think we showed a great performance today. Of course, the ending was rather unfortunate. Again, we believed in ourselves and in our quality. We have to take the positives from this performance. We played well in transition and it’s agonising that we didn’t reward ourselves.”

Max Kruse: “It’s very unfortunate. When you hold a 3-2 lead after 70 minutes you should normally manage to win the game. We simply acted to carelessly in defence today. Usually, if you score three goals on the road you should be able to walk away with something.”

Alexander Nouri: “Dortmund desperately needed the victory. To then pull off such a performance, and even dominate the game during spells of the second half, but still suffer a loss is extremely unfortunate. Especially when two penalty decisions lead to the dropped points. The dynamics of this game never allowed anyone to predict a winner today. We are very disappointed right now, but I’m sure that we will soon feel more pride than anything else.”

On the season:

Zlatko Junuzovic: “We developed as a team. For more than half of the season we found ourselves battling relegation but we freed ourselves from this situation. Our foundations are good and now we need to make the right decisions for the future. It would’ve been great to reach the absolute season-peak today, but nonetheless we can look back on a strong performance in the second half of the season.”

Alexander Nouri: “Over the course of the season, we grew immensely as a team and consistently stayed true to our path. That was evident again today and this continuous improvement is an important confirmation of our work.”

Max Kruse: “Obviously we faced very strong opponents in the last three weeks. But it’s still agonising that we didn’t manage to qualify for the Europa League. We had the chance but lost some of our tension in the past few weeks. In a couple of weeks we will be able to draw a positive conclusion under the season, but at the moment I’m just disappointed.”

Frank Baumann: “The bottom line is that we are satisfied with this season. The team did a fantastic job to get out of the relegation zone and they invested a lot. If someone had told us a few months ago that we would finish in eighth place, we would certainly not have objected. We barely missed out on the Europa League and the disappointment is understandably very high right now, especially since we held a lead in Dortmund after 70 minutes.”

On the support of the fans:

Fin Bartels: “That was truly amazing. It was a goose-bumps atmosphere for the entire 90 minutes. These kinds of games are why we play football.”

Zlatko Junuzovic: “The fans deserved a victory today. More support is simply not possible, we know that.”

Max Kruse: “Our fans pushed us forward in the last three weeks. It wasn’t their fault that we didn’t manage to qualify for Europe.”
