The Hungary national team’s participation in the European Championship ended at the round of 16 against Belgium. The “Red Devils” were right to be touted as the favourites as they beat Hungary 4-0 despite the underdogs’ spirited performance.  Werder’s László Kleinheisler wasn’t able to take part after being announced in the starting XI, as he picked up an injury in the warm up and was forced to watch the comprehensive defeat from the sidelines. Despite scoring an early goal, Belgium struggled against a courageous Hungary side for much of the game but managed to break the EURO 2016 surprise package’s resistance with two goals in two minutes late in the second half, before Yannick Carrasco rounded off the scoring in the 91st minute to set up a meeting with Wales in the quarterfinals.

The European Championship elimination was a doubly hard pill to swallow for László Kleinheisler, one of Hungary’s most impressive players during the tournament. Werder Bremen’s attacking midfielder had been suffering from muscle stiffness following the team’s final training session and the disappointment and shock was delivered to Kleinheisler during the warm up at the Stadium Municipal in Toulouse, when Bernd Stock was unable to give him the green light to play even though the player had begun warming up with the rest of the team. The red-head was replaced by Ádám Pintér in the starting XI.

Kleinheisler Werder’s most successful player at EURO 2016

Overall, it was nevertheless a successful European Championship for the Werder man in France. He was voted as Man of the Match in Hungary’s 2-0 win over Austria in the first match of the tournament after assisting one of the goals. He also initiated the move for the equaliser against Iceland in the second match. Unfortunately, he also picked up his second yellow card of the tournament in the game against the Vikings and was forced to be only a spectator in the gripping 3-3 draw with Portugal due to his suspension. Hungary, who played well during the competition, were the surprise package in the group stage and showed that they deserved to qualify for their first European Championship in 44 years by topping their group and qualifying for the last 16. He will now follow Theo Gebre Selassie (Czech Republic) and Zlatko Junuzovic (Austria) home as the third and final Werder player to be eliminated from the tournament.
