Bremen and Wolfsburg shared the points in an action-packed 2-2 draw on Sunday afternoon. Ducksch scored an early opener for Werder (7’), who managed to maintain their lead for the majority of the first half, before Cerny hit home the equaliser for the hosts in the 39th minute. VfL’s lead through Paredes (59’) after the break was short-lived, as Borré responded with a strong header to bring the Green-Whites level again. SVW were then denied a penalty following a handball in the box, so both teams went home with just one extra point added to their tallies.

Line-up and squad: Head coach Ole Werner opted to place his trust in the squad that secured a home win against Union Berlin last week, and made no changes to his starting XI for the away clash against VfL Wolfsburg. Niklas Stark made an appearance in the squad again after a long injury spell, and Dawid Kownacki was forced to sit out at the last minute due to illness.

Werder’s starting XI: Zetterer, Deman, Jung, Stage, Ducksch, Weiser, Bittencourt, Veljkovic, Borré, Schmid and Friedl.

Bench: Dos Santos Haesler, Stark, Pieper, Lynen, Njinmah, Agu, Woltemade, Opitz and Röcker.

Early Werder celebrations before equaliser

First-half highlights:

7th minute: GOALLL! Marvin Ducksch opens the scoring for SVW with an effortless curling free-kick, which flies in off the post and leaving Pervan completely powerless as the ball flies into the back of his net.

25th minute: Majer goes down and a free-kick is awarded to Wolfsburg on the left-hand side just outside of the box. Lacroix gets to the ball before Veljkovic, but is unable to put any power behind it, allowing Zetterer to make the save with ease.

31st minute: Schmid and Ducksch combine in the box, before playing it out to Weiser. The right-back delivers the ball along the floor to Schmid, who just misses turning the ball goalwards. Stage’s follow-up shot is also blocked.

37th minute: Václav Cerny equalises for the hosts. Friedl attempts to clear the ball, but it deflects unfortunately into Cerny’s path, who just has to stick out a leg to put the ball through Zetterer’s legs and into the back of the net.

41st minute: Cerny gets himself into a one-on-one with Zetterer, but loses his footing, and the Werder goalkeeper is able to smother it.

44th minute: Borré plays the ball back out of the box to Schmid, who spots Bittencourt on his left. The number ten plays in Deman, who carries the ball, but loses the ball in a duel against a defender. A great chance for the Green-Whites.

Two goals, red card and no penalty

Second-half highlights:

48th minute: Ducksch can’t quite get the right connection on the ball played in by Borré, and he heads it just wide of the Wolfsburg goal. A good chance for SVW!

52nd minute: Borré looks for Stage, who wins the aerial battle against two VfL defenders, but his header goes wide of the right post by a good two metres.

59th minute: Kevin Paredes puts the hosts back in the lead with their second of the game. Wolfsburg crank up the pace and combine down the right wing, before playing in Paredes, who sprints onto the ball before finding the back of the net.

65th minute: GOALLL for the Green-Whites! Rafael Borré levels the scoring and gets the equaliser for SVW! The Colombian jumps high in the box and nods a perfect cross from Schmid into the bottom right corner of the Wolfsburg net.

71st minute: Borré whips in a corner and finds Schmid, whose header hits the outstretched arm of a Wolfsburg player. Referee Reichel doesn’t point to the spot, and there is no subsequent VAR check. That has to have been a penalty!

88th minute: Red card! Maxence Lacroix is awarded a second yellow and sent off the pitch after bringing down Njinmah. Werder now have a numerical advantage!

95th minute: Full time! SV Werder Bremen and VfL Wolfsburg both take home one point in a 2-2 draw.

Summary: After a strong first half, SVW lost their momentum a little bit, but were able to respond quickly to Wolfsburg’s second goal. The controversy of the afternoon surrounds the penalty that wasn’t awarded to Werder in the second half.
