SVW came away with a 2-0 home win against Augsburg at the wohninvest WESERSTADION! A mixed first half ended with a goal for the Green-Whites from Stark (39’), before a much stronger showing in the second half was capped off by a Ducksch goal (65’), resulting in a 2-0 Werder win come full time.

Line-up and formation: Head coach Ole Werner had to do without Marco Friedl, who is out in the short-term with an adductor problem. Niklas Stark replaced him in the starting eleven, with Leonardo Bittencourt taking over the captain’s armband. There was one other change from last week’s game, with Olivier Deman coming in for Felix Agu.

Werder’s starting XIZetterer – Deman, Jung, Stark, Stage, Ducksch, Weiser, Bittencourt, Veljkovic, Borré, Schmid

Bench: Pavlenka – Kownacki, Lynen, Njinmah, Keïta, Agu, Woltemade, Groß, Röcker.

Werder get stuck in

First-half highlights:

5th minute: Tietz flicks a ball on in the box towards the run of Vargas, but the Swiss attacker just fails to get on the end of it. A lucky break for Werder!

9th minute: Stage has a go from the edge of the box and his low effort is creeping into the bottom corner until Dahmen is able to get a hand on it at full stretch.

18th minute: A misplaced pass lands at Jensen’s feet. He’s caught by surprise and isn’t able to make the most of the situation as Jung manages to recover for SVW.

24th minute: Augsburg are increasing in confidence and Dorsch lets fly from distance, only just missing the target.

29th minute: A swing and a miss from Zetterer inside his own box opens the door for Tietz, but with only a scrambling Zetti to beat, he chips the ball narrowly wide of the gaping goal. What a let-off!

34th minute: Bittencourt whips in a cross from the left with Green-Whites arriving in the box, but Udokhai is able to keep his cool and clear the ball away under pressure.

39th minute: SVW break the deadlock! After a training-ground corner-kick routine sees Weiser’s shot pushed behind, Ducksch takes another corner from the other side and the ball is flicked home by the head off Niklas Stark. 1-0 to Werder!

44th minute: Ducksch’s long ball towards Borré looks to be dealt with by Dahmen. However, an FCA defender runs into his leaping goalkeeper and the ball spills out, almost right into the Colombian’s path inside the box, but he is a split second slower than Mbabu and gives away a free-kick.

Ducksch doubles the lead and secures the win

Second-half highlights:

49th minute: The second half starts with a good tempo from both sides, with both wanting to grab a hold of the contest. An Augsburg freekick hits the wall. After that, Borré starts the next attack, playing a brilliant ball to set Ducksch away, who tries to play it back across to Stage, but Dahmen just gets there first.

53rd minute: Werder corner – Stage receives the ball on the edge of the box and takes a shot, but the ball flies just wide. So close!

57th minute: Ducksch gets away from the defence and looks up to see Schmid, who is also clean through. The Austrian is played through by Ducksch and only has Dahmen to beat, but he fires his effort well over the bar.

65th minute:  Goooooal! Marvin Ducksch puts SV Werder Bremen 2-0 ahead! What a move! Schmid and Weiser combine on the right-hand side, before Werder’s number 8 whips a perfect ball into the middle. Ducksch rises highest in the middle and powers home.

71st minute: Dorsch takes a volley from the edge of the box, with Zetterer diving across his goal towards it. The ball goes narrowly wide, and Werder’s goalkeeper had it covered.

74th minute: Engels tries to guide an Augsburg cross on target, but his shot is blocked by Deman. Great defending! The resulting corner doesn’t lead to anything

87th minute: Engels hits the bar! He hammers a shot from the right-hand corner of the box and his effort crashes into the woodwork.

90+5th minute: Full time! SV Werder Bremen come away with a 2-0 win against FC Augsburg.

Summary: As expected, Augsburg were a difficult opponent to play against, with Werder having to fight for every inch. SVW showed all their know-how, especially in the second half and dominated for long periods of the game – meaning that in the end the result was more than deserved.
