All eyes were on Niclas Füllkrug on Saturday as he returned to Osterdeich for the first time since his move to Borussia Dortmund. Before the game, the reigning Bundesliga Golden Boot winner was given an official farewell by the SV Werder management with a picture, a bouquet of flowers and an SVW varsity jacket. “I met up with a lot of old friends and acquaintances today,” said Füllkrug after the game. “I was very happy to be able to express my gratitude to the fans once again.”

It’s no secret that the Germany international is still on good terms with his former teammates at Werder. In a recent interview on his impending retirement, Christian Groß revealed that he is still very close with “Fülle.” Marvin Ducksch also spoke to his former strike partner in the days leading up to the game. “We still get along well, but our friendship had to be put on hold at kick-off,” explains Füllkrug. “That’s what I have to do to be able to put in the best performance for my team.”

Despite that, the Dortmund forward – a Werder academy graduate – will always have a special connection to his old club. “I’m still a Werder fan,” says Füllkrug. “I follow the team and the boys, and I still get excited to watch them. The club is going in a very positive direction at the moment.” Even if the striker, who made 124 appearances for SVW, is now on the opposing team, he will remain a welcome guest at the wohninvest WESERSTADION.
