The Bundesliga’s in-form team are coming to Bremen on Saturday (15:30 CET). Niko Kovač’s side have picked up from where they left off before the break and have won both of their league games in 2023. Although SVW are coming up against a strong team, Ole Werner is still confident ahead of the game: “Every team has things in their style of play that you can exploit. In the end we just have to focus on our own strengths,” said the head coach in Friday’s presser.

The state of the squad: Not much has changed since Wednesday. Romano Schmid and Felix Agu will definitely still miss out. Leonardo Bittencourt missed Friday’s team training with a cold but he could still feature. “We’ll have to wait and see how Leonardo is tomorrow,” explained the head coach.

The opponents: Wolfsburg are in superb form. They are unbeaten in their last ten and they have won their last six games in the Bundesliga. They are currently on their second longest winning run in the club’s history. Only in 2009 did VfL record more victories on the trot. Ole Werner is expecting a tough test on Saturday afternoon: “In terms of the quality of their squad, they are right up there with the top teams in the league,” said the 34-year-old.  “They are doing lots of things right at the moment. Results like this don’t come out of nowhere at this level.”

Lots of goals on both sides

Previous encounters: Saturday’s game will be the 50th meeting between the two sides in the Bundesliga. They have also met six times in the DFB-Pokal and once in the Supercup. SVW have been victorious on 25 occasions and there have been eleven draws. The record between the two sides in the league is predictably close. VfL can boast one more victory in this fixture than Werder (VfL 20 wins, SVW 19) and the Wolves have also scored one more goal. Recently, however, Bremen have been on the losing side more often. In the last five meetings the Green-Whites have won one, drawn one and lost three.

Goals guaranteed: Since the Wolves were promoted in 1997, Werder have scored more goals against Saturday’s opponents than they have against any other side in the Bundesliga (87). This is also the case for Wolfsburg, who have scored 88 goals against SVW.
