The first home game of the 2022/23 Bundesliga season is over. SVW and VfB Stuttgart both go away from the game with a point. Just as against Wolfsburg, Werder put on lots of pressure from the start and took an early lead through Niclas Füllkrug (4’). It was only shortly before half time that the visitors found their footing in the game and they equalised through Wataru Endo (38’). The second half was not quite as eventful as the first. Stuttgart grew into the game strongly and Silas Wamangituka (77’) gave the visitors the lead. In the final phase of the match, Werder came forward one last time and were able to equalise through Oliver Burke (90+5’) to take a point from the game.

Squad news: Romano Schmid, who missed the season opener with a positive COVID-19 test, took a place on the bench today. This was also the case for Benjamin Goller, who was available again following his injury. Fabio Chiarodia was not available for selection given he is travelling with the Italy U19 squad. Nick Woltemade was another absentee despite being in the squad against Wolfsburg.

Werder’s starting eleven: Pavlenka – Jung, Pieper, Stage, Ducksch, Weiser, Bittencourt, Füllkrug, Veljkovic, Friedl, and Gruev.

Bench: Zetterer – Stark, Burke, Schmidt, Rapp, Buchanan, Agu, Schmid and Goller.

Werder start the better of the two sides

Highlights from the first half:

4th minute: Goooal! Niclas Füllkrug puts Werder ahead! After a cross from Tony Jung, Werder’s number 11 buries the ball perfectly into the net with a header to make it 1-0!

10th minute: Niclas Füllkrug receives the ball from strike partner Ducksch and rifles the ball against the crossbar! SO CLOSE!

16th minute: Warning! Referee Robert Hartmann shows Marco Friedl a yellow card after he brings down Tomas.

32nd minute: Pavlenka can’t keep hold of a Stuttgart shot. The ball bounces off him and falls directly to a Stuttgart player. Werder captain Marco Friedl just about manages to scramble it clear.

38th minute: A spark from Stuttgart! Wataru Endo slams the ball into the net. 1-1.

A thrilling end to the game

Highlights from the second half:

54th minute: Niclas Füllkrug wants to release partner Marvin Ducksch through on goal, but Anton gets to the ball just before Werder’s number 7.

55th minute: After a Bremen attack, Stuttgart suddenly counter and find themselves through on goal. Pavlenka is up to the task and makes the stop.

69th minute: After an uneventful period, Werder come again through Marvin Ducksch. Werder’s top scorer from last season curls one just over the bar from sixteen yards out.

77th minute: Silas Wamangituka scores for Stuttgart to make it 1-2!

80th minute: After a Werder corner, the Schwabens counter-attack with lightning speed and find themselves one-on-one with Pavlenka again. Werder’s number 1 makes a fantastic block!

90+5th minute: GOOOOOOOOOAL! IN THE FINAL SECONDS! Oliver Burke equalises for Werder in the fifth minute of additional time.

90+7th minute: That’s it! SVW and VfB Stuttgart come away with a point each after a thrilling end to the game.

Summary: Werder wanted to build on their performance against Wolfsburg and they did just that. The visitors came out much stronger after the break and went into a 1-2 lead, but Werder fought back to earn a point for the second consecutive game of the season.
