A hard fight was ultimately rewarded with three important points as SV Werder Bremen celebrated a 2-1 victory against fellow promoted side FC Schalke 04 at the wohninvest WESERSTADION on Saturday evening. The guests started well and even took the lead, but had their goal ruled out after VAR intervention. The Green-Whites did well to remain calm and made sure to take their own chances. Niclas Füllkrug put Werder ahead in the 30th minute, but the game wasn’t over yet. Marvin Ducksch added a second to solidify the lead after the break (76’), but a late consolation goal from Dominick Drexler (89’) ensured a nervy end to the match. Mitchell Weiser played a starring role in the victory, setting up both of Werder’s goals.

Squad: Ole Werner was able to recall Marco Friedl against Schalke 04. Werder’s captain returned from his ban as a result of his red card against SC Freiburg and took the place of Anthony Jung who had been unable to train this week due to illness. Felix Agu and Lee Buchanan were not a part of the matchday squad. However, Nicolai Rapp returned to fill the spaces on the bench following his persistent muscle injury.

Starting eleven: Pavlenka – Stark, Pieper, Ducksch, Weiser, Bittencourt, Füllkrug, Veljkovic, Schmid, Gruev and Friedl.

Bench: Zetterer – Jung, Stage, Burke, Dinkci, Schmidt, Rapp, Groß and Chiarodia.

Intense battle

Highlights from the first half:

2nd minute: This isn’t going to be an easy game. The visitors already make headway towards the Werder goal. The ball comes into the centre of the box from the right and runs across to Bülter who is waiting anxiously. He fires towards the top corner but Pavlenka is there to make the save.

8th minute: Florent Mollet drives from midfield for about 20 meters before releasing Bülter. Fortunately his shot goes wide of the left post.

13th minute: Now it’s Werder’s time to get on the front foot, however their just missing that final bit of accuracy in the final third. Marco Friedl tries to find Niclas Füllkrug with a lob, but it just isn’t accurate enough. The visitors have their eye on Werder’s number 11 at all times, so he is well covered.

16th minute: That shocked everyone. Schalke bring the pressure and force the first goal. A deflected ball from Alex Král goes over the line, however, there is a clear offside in the build up. VAR rules out the goal.

23rd minute: The Royal Blues are really giving everything they’ve got here. A mistake in their build up play however gifts the ball to the Green-Whites. Füllkrug shoots from just outside the right hand side of the box, but Yoshida is there to make a good block and force a corner.

30th minute: GOOOOAL for Werder! What a fantastic bit of build up play! The visitors had been the better side up until this point, but the Green-Whites make the most of their opportunity in front of goal. Weiser does brilliantly down the right hand side; he gets to the by-line before back heeling it into the path of Niclas Füllkrug, who smashes the ball into the back of the net to make it 1-0!

32nd minute: Mitchell Weiser continues to play just as well as before. He dribbles past three Schalke defenders and pulls the ball back yet again into a dangerous position. This time it’s Amos Pieper waiting to pull the trigger, but he fires over the crossbar.

38th minute: The Royal Blues haven’t let the opening goal dampen their spirits. Again they come forward, and this time Terodde connects with a cross and manages to hit the post.

42nd minute: Füllkrug brings the ball forward out of midfield before connecting with Marco Friedl down the left flank. Friedl floats the ball into the path of Marvin Ducksch who tries to knock it back down into Füllkrug’s final path. This time Yoshida is alert to the danger and clears.

45th minute: Shortly before the half time whistle blows, the home side try their luck again – Füllkrug dribbles down the right and crosses into Ducksch who is lurking around the penalty spot. Ducksch runs and tries to flick the ball across the face of goal but sends it agonizingly wide.

Fighting spirit on show until the last second

Highlights from the second half:

50th minute: After the restart, the Royal Blues want to make their mark on the game. The Green-Whites, however, are fighting fire with fire and chasing a second goal for themselves.

54th minute: Schalke push forward – Veljkovic manages to snuff out a through ball to Král. The ball falls at the feet of Terodde, who can’t find the target either.

59th minute: Füllkrug decides to try his luck from 20 meters out but his shot just goes over the crossbar.

62nd minute: Král whips in a cross into Werder’s penalty area and Terodde delicately side foots the ball towards goal from close range. But Werder’s number 1 is in the right place at the right time! Pavlenka makes a great save to keep the Green-Whites ahead.

66th minute: A throw-in for Schalke is headed out of the penalty area. However, Alex Král is waiting there and attempts to volley the ball into the left corner. However, Pavlenka is on the spot again and plucks the ball out and pushes it away to safety.

69th minute: With his first official act in the game, Groß is called to action at the back. Kenan Karaman storms down the left hand side where he is primed to cross into the box where two Schalke players are waiting. Christian Groß makes a great block however.

72nd minute: There’s not much time left on the clock and Schalke are desperately pushing for the equalizer. Marius Bülter's cross into the box causes havoc, bouncing off one player to the next. The Royal Blues don’t do anything effective with the ball before Schmid hoofs it out of danger.

76th minute: GOOOAL for Werder! That’s the important one! Again Mitchell Weiser is the man of the hour – Werder’s number 8 plays a delightful long ball into the path of Marvin Ducksch. Ducksch then coolly chips it past Alexander Schwolow to make it 2-0!

81st minute: That was almost the third! Following another beautiful pass from the back, Marvin shoots from the half way down the left hand side. Alexander Schwolow dives and makes the save.

89th minute: Goal for Schalke 04! Polter gets his head to the ball in the penalty area and passes to Drexler who knocks it past Pavlenka to make it 2-1!

90+4 minutes: There’s a flurry of corners for the visitors. Alexander Schwolow comes up for the final one. Pavlenka can’t collect it cleanly but pushes the ball to Weiser who knocks it forward. Schalke hurry back as the ball is played to Ducksch but he shoots over the bar.

90+5 minutes: Full time!

Summary: SV Werder Bremen fought hard to take an important three points from a tough opponent. Despite Schalke having several chances of their own and controlling the game at times, the Green-Whites came out on top to win this battle of the promoted sides due to their superior chance conversion and fighting spirit.
