Werder Bremen faced SC Paderborn in the second round of the DFB-Pokal on Wednesday evening. In the Home-Deluxe Arena, Werder tried to take control of the game from the start, but had to head into the tunnel at half time 2-0 down after goals from Felix Platte (22’) and Sirlord Conteh (42’). The second division side dominated proceedings to start the second half as well, until Leonardo Bittencourt scored immediately after being substituted on (65’). Mitchell Weiser levelled things up for the Green-Whites with a headed goal from a corner. Werder then failed to seal the game in extra time despite supposedly taking the lead. SVW had to wave goodbye to their hopes of DFB-Pokal glory after losing in the subsequent penalty shoot-out.

Squad information: Ole Werner made three changes to the side that lost to Mainz in the last Bundesliga match. Milos Veljkovic, Jens Stage and Oliver Burke replaced the injured Marco Friedl, Christian Gross as well as Marvin Ducksch in the starting eleven. Despite the changes, Werder stuck to their familiar 3-5-2 formation.

Starting eleven: Pavlenka – Jung, Stark, Pieper, Stage, Weiser, Burke, Füllkrug, Veljkovic, Schmid and Gruev.

Bench: Zetterer – Bittencourt, Salifou, Dinkci, Schmidt, Goller, Buchanan, Agu and Chiarodia.

Ice-cold Paderborn

Highlights from the first half:

2nd minute: SVW combine up front for the first time in the game. Mitchell Weiser has a headed attempt on goal from a well-placed cross. His header, however, is within the keeper’s reach and Leopold Zingerle grasps the ball safely.

22nd minute: Felix Platte gives Paderborn the lead. Marvin Pieringer is put through down the left hand side from a long ball. He crosses into the path of Felix Platte, who is lurking around the centre spot. Paderborn’s number 36 doesn’t miss a step and punishes Werder. 1-0 Paderborn.

40th minute: Jen Stage ramps up  the pace in midfield and plays the onrushing Burke through on goal. He is prevented from shooting by a fantastic challenge, but the ball still falls at the feet of Niclas Füllkrug. Fülle unleashes a shot, but Zingerle gets his body in the way. It’s the best Werder chance of the game so far.

43rd minute: Sirlord Conteh doubles Paderborn’s lead. Werder lose the ball in midfield and Paderborn break quickly. Conteh chases a long ball forward. Milos Veljkovic doesn’t go hard enough into the challenge and Conteh is able to knock the ball past him and Pavlenka who had come to collect the ball. He then taps the ball into the net. It’s a sucker punch considering Werder had the chance to equalize just moments before.

Werder fight back to take the game to extra time!

Highlights from the second half:

48th minute: Marcel Hoffmeier receives a long ball from the middle of the park and dribbles his way into the Werder penalty area. He tries to go himself from a tight angle, but shoots well over.

56th minute: Paderborn bring the pressure in the early stages of the second half. Once again, Ron Schallenberg makes his way through on goal, but Pavlenka makes the save.

65th minute: Werder steal the ball from Paderborn in midfield. Mitchell Weiser lifts the ball into the path of Bittencourt who has only just come on. He gets past one Paderborn defender before shooting from a central position and pulling one back for Werder. 2-1!

84th minute: Mitchell Weiser leaps up the highest to connect with a corner from Leonardo Bittencourt and heads in the equaliser!

90+5 minutes: Final whistle! The game heads to extra time after it finishes 2-2 in regulation time. There will be at least another 30 minutes for one side to win it.

Nothing to split the two sides after 120 minutes

92nd minute: After a Paderborn corner, Werder initiate a counterattack. Leo Bittencourt hooks the ball through to Eren Dinkci, who runs through on goal, but is stopped on the edge of the penalty area.

98th minute: The octopus keeps Werder in the game! Pavlenka punches the ball away from danger, but it’s returned back into the box where Pavlas is there to make another decisive save. Very important play from Pavlenka.

101st minute: Now it’s Werder’s time to attack. Nikas Schmidt crosses to Eren Dinkci who skilfully brings the ball down from the aid. The ball is deflected out of play as he tries to dribble into the box. It’s a Werder corner.

101st minute: There is the lead (supposedly)! Ilia Gruev finds Niclas Füllkrug from the corner who buries it into the net with a header. During Werder’s celebration, there are a host of complaints from the Paderborn sideline and players. Referee Willenborg consults with his assistants and decides to have the corner retaken as there was deemed to be a Bremen foul in the build up. Odd.

111th minute: Jiri Pavlenka comes out to clear a long ball into his area from Paderborn, although the shot-stopper doesn’t quite connect with it properly. The ball lands at the feet of Niclas Füllkrug, but Paderborn are able to poach the ball back quickly. They come again on the counter, but Pavlas distinguishes himself with a fine save.

113th minute: Yet again Paderborn counter, this time down the right flank. Bittencourt makes a pivotal block to prevent the ball coming into the box.

119th minute: Paderborn have a goal ruled out! Following a swift counterattack, Pavlenka is able to parry, but all Fabio Chiarodia can do is clear it out for a corner. After lots of pushing and shoving the ball ends up in the back of Werder’s net. The referee blows his whistle for another foul and chalks it off.

120th minute: That’s that! The game heads to penalties.

Bittencourt has his decisive penalty saved

The penalty shootout:

Werder 1st penalty: Füllkrug steps up first and coolly slots Werder ahead. He tucks his penalty nicely into the bottom left corner! 0-1!

Paderborn 1st penalty: Paderborn score. Robert Leiperzt converts his penalty. 1-1.

Werder 2nd penalty: Milos Veljkovic, our captain for the day, does the same as Fülle and finds the net with a confident finish. 1-2!

Paderborn 2nd penalty: Paderborn equal things up. Julian Justvan scores. 2-2.

Werder 3rd penalty: Niklas Schmidt bags Werder’s third. 2-3!

Paderborn 3rd penalty: Florent Muslija makes it 3-3.

Werder 4th penalty: A fantastic penalty from Ilia Gruev as he finds the side-netting. The keeper had no chance. 3-4!

Paderborn 4th penalty: Paderborn score to make it sudden-death. 4-4.

Werder 5th penalty: Bittencourt’s penalty is saved! Pavlenka needs to save to keep Werder in it. 4-4!

Paderborn 5th penalty: Paderborn convert and knock Werder out of the cup. Pavlenka didn’t stand a chance trying to save Richmond Tachie’s penalty. 5-4.

Final whistle: Werder are knocked out as Paderborn progress to the Round of 16.

Summary: Paderborn were, as expected, an uncomfortable opponent to face. After the first half had gone everything but to plan for Ole Werner’s side, the Green-Whites showed their grit and spirit, as they have done so many times this season, to draw level. In extra time, Werder failed to close the game out and put a lid on proceedings. They would pay the price in the penalty shootout and were forced to wave goodbye to their dreams of a cup run.
