In the final game of 2022, SVW suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of RB Leipzig at the wohninvest WESERSTADION. After a quiet opening phase, the game gathered momentum following the opening goal from Silva in the 13th minute. Füllkrug, Jung and Bittencourt all had chances to equalise but went unrewarded in the first half. Leipzig were also unable to take their chances. After the break, Christian Groß (57’) bagged the equaliser for Werder with a spectacular goal, but then Schlager put the visitors back ahead in the 71st minute. Leipzig were able to hold on from there until the final whistle went.

Squad and formation: Ole Werner had to do without centre-back Milos Veljkovic against RB Leipzig due to injury. Ilia Gruev was also missing this time out due to illness. The side looked a little different to the one that lost to Bayern Munich in midweek. Oliver Burke returned to the bench, whilst Benjamin Goller made his return to the matchday squad, also taking a place in the dugout.

Starting eleven: Pavlenka – Friedl, Stark, Pieper – Weiser, Schmid, Groß, Bittencourt, Jung – Ducksch, Füllkrug

Bench: Zetterer – Stage, Burke, Dinkci, Schmidt, Rapp, Goller, Buchanan, Chiarodia

Back and forth after a quiet start

Highlights from the first half:

2nd minute: Werder are awake. SVW put Leipzig under pressure from kick off and the Red Bulls have difficulty keeping the ball under the control in the face of such intensity.

10th minute: First chance for the Leipzig side. Nkunku and Henrichs try and combine but can’t find a way through the Green-Whites’ defence.

13th minute: Leipzig counter rapidly off the back of a Werder attack. Forsberg finds Silva and he finds the corner to put Leipzig ahead. 1-0.

16th minute: Jung wants to play it back to Pavlenka but his pass isn’t quite accurate and it creates a bit of havoc, but Pavlenka is able to clear just in time.

22nd minute: A great chance for Werder! Pieper makes a run in behind from Ducksch’s free kick and heads across the face of goal for Füllkrug who is ready to tap it in. However, a Leipzig player is in the way and blocks it from going across the line. So close!

26th minute: Werder still on top. Weiser and Füllkrug combine down the right flank. Weiser wants to lay up Ducksch, but a Leipzig defender is just about able to get his knee to the ball to deflect it away from danger.

28th minute: Pieper initiates an attack and finds Weiser who plays a through ball direct to Bittencourt. Yet again, he looks to lay up Ducksch but a Leipzig player cuts out the pass at the final moment. After this attack the score should at least be 1-1 by now!

29th minute: Nkunku is a few meters out and ready to pull the trigger, but Stark and Pieper throw themselves in front of the ball. The resulting corner doesn’t come to anything.

38th minute: Weiser loops a long ball in the direction of Füllkrug’s run. Füllkrug then lays it to Jung who shoots from the edge of the area. The shot is a powerful one but takes a deflection directly into the hands of the Leipzig keeper.

42nd minute: Werder keep coming. Bittencourt is able to weave through and shoot but Blaswich parries away.

45th minute: Raum puts in Nkunku who is able to role past Stark in a single movement. He comes up short against Pavlenka however.

Fast-paced second half

Highlights from the second half:

48th minute: Szoboszlai shoots but the ball is deflected out for a corner. The corner comes in and Orban tries to bury his header but it goes over the bar.

49th minute: Schmid tries to serve up Ducksch but overhits the ball. Blaswich collects it securely. In the next stage of play, Weiser tries with another ball, but yet again Blaswich is there to gather.

57th minute: What a goal! Christian Groß scores for Werder Bremen to make it 1-1! The ball deflects of Orban which makes it absolutely unstoppable, flying into the top corner. A deserved equaliser.

59th minute: Weiser brings a high ball under control before he is hacked down. Ducksch steps up to take the free kick but can’t find the target.

65th minute: Leipzig win a free kick on the edge of the box after Friedl was deemed to have fouled Schlager. Nkunku steps up to take it but smashes it five meters over the bar.

71st minute: Leipzig take the lead. Xaver Schlager scores their second. Pieper and Pavlenka are powerless to stop his shot right into the bottom corner.

75th minute: Friedl floats the ball into the penalty area where Füllkrug is waiting. He jumps and connects with the ball well but Blaswich reacts in time and grasps the ball tight.

77th minute: This time its Jung crossing into Füllkrug. He is unable to control the ball but the attack isn’t quite over. Pieper sends in another long ball, however Blaswich comes to poach it out of the air.

89th minute: A murmur echoes around the stadium after Füllkrug out jumps two Leipzig defends to head on target, but the Leipzig shot stopper is there again as he always is.

90+1 minutes: Füllkrug goes down in the penalty area but the referee waves play on.

90+5 minutes: Full time! Werder lose their final game of 2022.

Summary: A very even game that ended in defeat for Werder. Both teams had plenty of good opportunities, but Leipzig were just a bit better on the ball and technically more accurate. Werder tried repeatedly to find Füllkrug in the opposition box with long balls but were unsuccessful for the most part. The last few minutes were an exciting spectacle in which Bremen pushed hard to draw level, as a point would have been well deserved. It was Leipzig however who  held on until the referee blew to mark full time
