SVW travelled back home with a 3-1 win from their friendly against Heeslinger SC. The hosts had a couple of good chances at the start of the game, but they couldn't find a way past Michael Zetterer in goal. Then Werder jumped into a two-goal lead thanks to goals from Leonardo Bittencourt and then an ice-cold finish from Eren Dinkci. Marvin Ducksch assisted both goals with some good work in the build-up. Werder kicked off the second half with the same vigour as the first, scoring just two minutes after kick off in which Löpping finished off a great Werder attack. The hosts were able to grab themselves a consolation goal from long range, but Werder came out of the game largely unchallenged.

Line-up and formation: In the friendly against Hesslinger SC, Hannes Drew replaced Ole Werner and Patrick Kohlmann in the dugout after both tested positive for COVID-19 this afternoon. Alongside many first-team players, Tim-Justin Dietrich from the U23 was in the starting eleven. In the second half, Drews made a host of changes with only Benjamin Goller and Dietrich staying on the pitch. It also marked the first senior appeareance for Dikeni Salifou in a SV Werder Bremen shirt

Werder’s starting eleven in the first half: Zetterer – Pieper, Stage, Ducksch, Bittencourt, Dietrich, Dinkci, Schmidt, Goller, Buchanan und Friedl.

Werder’s starting eleven in the second half: Dos Santos Haesler – Asante, Dietrich, Berger, Löpping, Kim, Schröder, Salifou, Goller, Polat und Reinke.

High tempo to the first half

Highlights from the first half:

6th minute: Heeslinger’s first chance in front of goal. Schuhmann gets through to the by-line and crosses into Rehling. The striker can only find the side netting, however.

7th minute: Heeslinger have a free kick in a dangerous position just on the edge of the Bremen penalty area. The wall does its job and blocks. Gerken tries to then lay up Schumann, but he misses.

19th minute: Goal for SVW! Eren Dinkci releases Marvin Ducksch down the right, who crosses into Bittencourt. Werder’s number 10 is able to slot past the keeper with ease.

22nd minute: A second goal for the Green-Whites! Again it’s Ducksch with the assist. This time it’s Dinkci with the cool finish in front of goal.

24th minute: Decent opportunity for Hesslinger! Kevin Rehling hits the post! Werder are lucky to escape that one.

43rd minute: Crossbar! Marvin Ducksch collects the ball on the edge of the box. He takes it first time, wrapping his foot around the ball, and sends it hurtling towards the top corner. He is denied by the woodwork!

44th minute: Almost 3-0 again! No points for guessing who! Marvin Ducksch shot on goal is blocked well by a Hesslinger defender.

Quieter second half

Highlights from the second half:

48th minute: Werder get their third!  SVW come out of the blocks quickly in the second half and increase their lead after only a couple of minutes. Löpping’s goal comes from a nice attack down the left hand side in which Mikail Polat had sent in an inviting ball across goal.

57th minute: Another good opportunity. Willi Reincke heads just wide from a corner.

74th minute: The hosts score! After a bit of confusion at the back, Werder lose the ball in the build-up. Cebulla pinches the ball and tries his luck from long distance. Eduardo Dos Santos Haesler can’t manage to pull off the save.

82nd minute: Werder nearly grab a fourth. Min-Woo Kim slips the ball into Davis Asante, who tries a cheeky backheel, however, the defender makes a last-ditch block.

90+2 minutes: Full time. Werder win 3-1.

Summary: SVW beat Heeslinger SC 3-1. In a fast-paced first half, the hosts had the better chances at first, but then Leonardo Bittencourt and Eren Dinkci scored, both after Marvin Ducksch had done a lot of the groundwork. Shortly after the start of the second half had kicked off, Werder added to their tally with a goal from Jakob Löpping. In a quieter second half, it looked for a long time as if there would be no further goals. However, after Bremen lost the ball in their own half, Heeslinger scored the best goal of the day and managed to bag a consolation goal.
