Another bright young talent, goalkeeper Mio Backhaus, has extended his contract with SV Werder Bremen. The 18-year-old has been at the club since 2018 and has been taking part in camp in Zell am Ziller in recent days.

“Mio has great potential and has been constantly improving over the last few years. As the regular goalkeeper for our under 19s he has already been taking part more and more in first-team training last season. He was able to show off his ability with the squad and he will be a regular part of the training group during the new season too. He will continue to collect match practice in the u19 Bundesliga,” said Clemens Fritz, head of scouting and professional football at Werder.

Head coach Ole Werner also sang Backhaus’ praises: “He gives off a really calm aura for his age and is really polished on the ball. Those characteristics, as well as his good goalkeeping, have been on show not just in this training camp but before that too. I am really excited about continuing his development.”

Mio Backhaus, who played four times for Germany’s under-18 national team last season, also gave his thoughts on the extension: “I'm pleased to be able to extend with the club - it is like home for me. The club has guided me at every turn since the under 15s. I feel really comfortable at the club and in this city. On top of that I see myself having a long sporting career here and so I didn't have to think twice about the contract extension. I am really looking forward to what is to come and I will try to improve in every training session and to realise my dream of playing in the Bundesliga.”

Mio Backhaus joined SV Werder Bremen under 15s in 2018. In the season just gone, he appeared 15 times for the u19 team with a further five matches in the Regionalliga North for our u23s. Backhaus made the first-team squad for the first time against SV Sandhausen.
