Eren Dinkci made his debut in December 2020 and is currently in the middle of his first full season as a professional player. The striker has been in the matchday squad 23 times so far this campaign, but has had to settle for less playing time recently in comparison to the start of the season, when he got lots of minutes under his belt. However, the 20-year-old made his first start under Ole Werner last time out against Darmstadt after some of his colleagues were forced to miss out. The youngster relished this opportunity to once again prove he has the quality, but he remains level-headed: “You can’t read too much into just one game. We’ll have to see what happens during the rest of the season. I’m feeling good at the moment and I think I’m really on a high. I hope it stays like that!” said Dinkci at a presser on Wednesday afternoon.

Eren Dinkci on...

…his personal development: “I’ve had both highs and lows this season. I played a lot at the start and had some decent games but I also had a lot of bad ones. I am self-critical enough to know that. But I had a good game again recently. It’s quite up and down but I never went into my shell when I wasn’t playing. I’ve been involved in almost every game and I’ve had my playing time, which is something I wouldn’t have expected at the start of the season. It’s going well in training at the moment but it’s not always easy as a young player to be consistent all the time.”

…the game against Darmstadt: “I hadn’t been in the starting eleven for a long time. I wanted to start the game well and keep my mistakes to a minimum. You could tell after a bit of time that I’d settled into the game, especially in the second half. I know my strengths and it became apparent that I could utilise my pace against the defenders. It’s great that I was involved in the goal and in other good situations but I should’ve maybe scored two or three myself.”

… a possible return to the bench: “I don’t get worked up about these things. When I play, I play but when I don’t, I don’t. I have to stay focussed after a good game. In football, it’s always the case that you always want to play, score goals and develop your game. But you have to think about the team as a whole and when things are going well it’s hard for the coach to make changes. The team is the most important thing. As long as you win, everything else is irrelevant.”

…his strike partners Ducksch and Füllkrug: “I see it as a blessing to be able to play with those two. I can learn a lot from them. They have contrasting styles so I can learn something different from each of them. One is outstanding with his back to goal and the other is a great finisher, but finding the net is a strength of both players.”
