Werder midfielder Christian Groß went through a successful operation on his knee on Thursday. The 32-year-old, who sustained the injury in training on Sunday after the home game against HSV, will be out for the at least the next six to eight weeks, according to head coach Markus Anfang, who spoke to the press ahead of the Green-Whites’ trip to Dynamo Dresden on Sunday (13:30 CEST).

Head coach Anfang will also have to deal without several other players for the Dresden game, including Leonardo Bittencourt and Felix Agu, though both returned to training with the team during the week.

Captain Ömer Toprak may be out for longer than the aforementioned Bittencourt and Agu. He will not take part in the game against Dresden due to a calf problem. “In Ömer’s case, it’s more like an accumulation of injuries. He hasn’t been doing too well in training for a long while up to now. For us to be able to plan with him, he needs to recover and regain his fitness,” explained Anfang, not giving an estimate on how long the central defender would be out. “There’s a pretty high chance that the wait might be a while longer,” concluded the 47-year-old.
