Thomas Schaaf will leave the club after his contract as technical director expires at the end of July.
"Due to the financial situation and the necessary savings also affecting personnel decisions, we were unfortunately unable to make Thomas Schaaf an offer. We mutually agreed to reach a decision now. For financial reasons, we will not be filling the position – the tasks will be redelegated. Björn Schierenbeck and Thomas Wolter will move closer to the U23s and share the remaining tasks," said Frank Baumann.
"Thomas Schaaf has done remarkable work for our club and has brought a lot to the table as technical director in the last three years: He has improved the coaching courses, improved the quality of development in the academy and has achieved a smoother transition into the first team. Thomas has done outstanding work for SVW as a player, coach and a technical director over the last 40 years, for which the Werder family will be eternally grateful," Frank Baumann added.
Thomas Schaaf has worked as technical director over the past three years after almost four decades of successful work as a player and later a coach. At the end of the 2020/21 season, he took over as head coach in a really difficult situation for the final game of the season but could not prevent the club’s relegation into the second division.
