After the final international break of the season, seven league games remain and the season is approaching crunch time. For Ole Werner and his team, things are moving “one after the other,” according to the head coach, who added that there was “little time to react to things.” Therefore, Werner was unwilling to change too much about the team’s ways. “You feel it more in these games compared to the previous ones, but at the end of the day it doesn’t change anything. We were full of motivation during the previous weeks and that won’t change. Now we’re pumped for Sandhausen,” the 33-year-old the media on Tuesday.

Werner said that the international break benefitted the team, allowing them to “take a breather because the end of the season will come around very quickly.” “Everyone had the opportunity to clear their head. The players who have had a few minor injuries recently have been able to fully overcome them. We hope that this week has helped us to make sure one or two players are back fit and will miss a game less through injury,” summarised Werner.

Gathering impressions

However, the week-long break was not enough for all of the squad’s injured players. “The injured players are still injured, not much has changed from the week before,” said Werner. Ömer Toprak and Marco Friedl are currently in rehabilitation training while Leonardo Bittencourt is still in home isolation following a positive Coronavirus case. Meanwhile, Marvin Ducksch was able to leave quarantine this week after making a recovery from the virus. “We’re monitoring how Marvin does physically from today and we’ll start reintroducing him this week. The training week is quite long so we have a lot of time,” said the coach.

The 33-year-old was not keen to pin down who would fill in the absences for the game against Sandhausen. “As always at the start of the week, you have a lot of things on your mind. Despite everything, we have a long week ahead of us with a lot of impressions to be made, and in which there will hopefully no need to make any grand changes. But that can happen too, so that’s why I’ve not yet made a decision at the start of the week on how we will play against Sandhausen, but rather I’m waiting for the first impressions.
