Milos Veljkovic’s Serbia took on Slovenia in their fourth Nations League match this summer. The centre-back started the game, as he did against Sweden and Norway. Despite taking a 2-0 lead, the Serbs had to settle for a point. Marco Friedl was in the Austria squad for their game against Denmark, but he had to watch their defeat from the bench.

Despite thrashing Slovenia 4-1 in Belgrade just over a week ago, Veljkovic’s Serbia had to settle for a point in the return fixture against Matjaz Kek’s side, despite taking a 2-0 lead. The Werder man played for the full 90 minutes as he did in the 1-0 win over Sweden last time out. Serbia are currently second in their group with seven points, behind leaders Norway who are sat on ten. They are four points clear of Sweden in third, and five clear of Slovenia in fourth.

Veljovic made it clear that “it is always an honour” to play for his country, even though the four international matches at the end of the busy season were very intense. “The very first game against Norway, who have the likes of Erling Haaland, demanded a lot from us and I struggled with cramp at the end. We played well and had lots of chances but we unfortunately lost the game. I then sat out for the following match. I am happy that I returned to the team for the third game against Sweden and I played for the full 90 minutes. We were very happy at the end of the game because we played well from the very start and we showed our quality. We played a lot of games in a few days but it is always good if you can maintain your rhythm,” explained the 26-year-old, who now has a well-deserved holiday to look forward to. “I can now spend some time with my family and get ready to attack the new season.”

Friedl returns to the squad

The Austria national team also played their fourth Nations League match on Monday, when they took on Denmark in Copenhagen. Marco Friedl, who was absent against France, returned to the squad but had to watch the entirety of the 2-0 defeat from the bench. Austria are sat third in their group on four points after four games and are five points behind leaders Denmark and three behind second-placed Croatia. France are bottom of the group on two points.
