There was less than half an hour between the announcement of Hannes Drews’ arrival and his first training session. Friday was very much a case of being thrown in at the deep end for Werder’s new assistant coach. “I’m very happy to be here. I’ve been welcomed with open arms and the weather is the same everywhere up north anyway,” joked the Neumünster native in his first chat with WERDER.de.
Drews, who holds a UEFA Pro Licence, had previously had contact with Frank Baumann on two occasions, but it was a case of third time lucky. Ole Werner of course played a key role in his appointment, having worked together at Holstein Kiel. “We always stayed in contact following our time at Kiel,” said Drews.
The new assistant coach, who held the same role at HSV last season, followed Werder’s last three matches of the year closely: “I had already watched a few Werder games under Markus Anfang, but I obviously paid a little more attention when the new coach came in.”
Drews was a youth coach at Kiel between 2011 and 2017 and the 39-year-old is set to take on a role in Werner’s coaching staff that will also see him help integrate youth players into the Green-Whites’ first team.
