Clemens Fritz is happy with the state of Werder’s team: There is a good balance between experienced leaders and young players who have room to develop. The recent contract extensions of Felix Agu, Romano Schmid Eren Dinkci have made the first steps towards the future, and youth players like goalkeeper Mio Backhaus, who was on the substitutes’ bench against SV Sandhausen, are also developing well. In his first chat to the press following his Covid-19 infection, Werder’s head of professional football spoke about the squad, the current injury list and the team’s next challenge away to FC St. Pauli.

Clemens Fritz on...

... the young players in the squad: “We’ve said before that we want to build a young squad who can develop further, but we also wanted to create value for the club, of course. When you look at the squad now, I think it’s a perfect mix of young players who can improve their game and experienced players. That was our goal, and it has to be the way we continue in the future. It’s even better that we’ve managed to extend Felix, Romano and Eren’s contracts here too. We’re also big fans of other youngsters, Mio Backhaus for example, who has performed brilliantly despite his young age – not just in our youth teams, but also in first-team training, where he finds himself regularly. He’s integrated himself into the group superbly, and the feedback from the rest of the squad is that they feel good with him on the training pitch.”

... current absences in the squad: “In terms of Corona, all our tests are negative – only Michael Zetterer is still in isolation at home. Following the Sandhausen game Manuel Mbom had an issue with his ankle and won’t train on Wednesday. Felix Agu should be able to return to training at the end of the week. Ömer Toprak, Marco Friedl, Milos Veljkovic and Mitchell Weiser will all take part in bits of training on Wednesday – they have all worked well with the fitness coaches, but we need to see how they deal with training. We don’t want to risk a longer-term injury with any of them by rushing them back.”

... the competition for places up front: “We know Eren Dinkci has a lot of quality, but we also have two unbelievable strikers who have done brilliantly over the course of this season in Marvin Ducksch and Niklas Füllkrug. With them there, it’s not easy for younger players to get game time, of course, but this season and even right now we’ve seen that you need every player by your side and we have to have a good and balanced squad. Eren wants to continue his career with us, which is something we’re delighted with. We’re with him all the way and we’re not planning to loan him out in summer.”

... Marvin Ducksch: “We’re over the moon to have signed Marvin here. We listened to the critics about the amount of money we paid for him, but we knew his strengths and the quality he brings to our side. When you see the partnership he has with Niklas, how they move, and how he finds space, dropping back now and again, you know he’s a striker who’s hard to predict and can always spring a moment of surprise in a game. You really have to keep a handle on him for the full 90 minutes if you’re up against him. This weekend, he wasn’t quite at the stratospheric level we’ve seen him at in other games, but he was in the right place at the right time and showed how dangerous he is. Off the pitch, he has a huge amount of respect within the squad and speaks about things when he needs to.”

... the upcoming match against St. Pauli: “We know how strong they are. I think it’s going to be an interesting game for us all, and we’re looking forward to it. It’s a proper top-of-the-table clash, a six-pointer, but we’re going to St. Pauli feeling good and need to train as well as we can all week to be fully prepared going into the game. It’s really important for us to be focused on each week as it comes and concentrating on the next task at hand. That’s one of the ways we’ve been doing so well in the last few weeks and months – we can think about things like the league table later, at the end of the season.”
