Deep in the Mainz penalty area in the 90th minute, it was who Eren Dinkci who rose highest to head in Tahith Chong’s cross to win the game for Werder Bremen. It was the perfect end to a rollercoaster of a year in the Bundesliga, as Theodor Gebre Selassie emphasised following the game: “The fact that we had to wait until the last minute for the winner is a typical representation of our year. It’s very important for us to be able to end the winless run.” Though it took until the 90th minute to come, it was a fully deserved victory for the Green-Whites over Mainz from the point of view of head coach Florian Kohfeldt and his players.

On the game:

Florian Kohfeldt: “The goal was a big relief. A draw wouldn't have been the end of the world, but a defeat would really have being a setback. With that win, we've taken a big step away from the bottom of the table towards the middle. We are also four points clear of the relegation zone now. I think that we were able to get our reward for the consistent performances we've put in over the last few weeks, in which we've had some injuries to key players. We should have taken the lead in the first half, but that also demonstrates the mentality of our team. We didn't take our foot off the gas and I always had the sense that we would be able to decide the game in our favour. Today we were rewarded for our performance - it was a deserved victory.”

Maximilian Eggestein: "It's crucial for us that were able to go into the winter break with a win in the league. This victory feels very good. You can see the importance of the three points when you look at the table and the boost it's given us away from the relegation zone.”

Theodor Gebre Selassie: "The most important thing is that we won. To have reached 250 games for Bremen is a great achievement but I would not have been happy if we hadn't have gotten points out of today's game. We deserved the win. We played with a lot of patience and waited for our chances to come. The fact that we had to wait until the last minute for the winner is a typical representation of our year. It’s very important for us to be able to end the winless run.”

Kevin Möhwald: "The wind feels very good. We've gone through a phase where we've picked up very few points lately, which is why this game against another team at the bottom of the table was so important. That's why we really want to win and we've achieved that goal.”

Marco Friedl: "We knew that Mainz would be compact. For this reason, it was important for us to use the full width of the pitch and move around a lot in order to create chances and openings. You could see that with the goal where the ball was crossed in from wide. It was difficult to break them down. Although we were in control of the ball for most of the game and Mainz let us play like that, you’re never safe because they’re always dangerous through set pieces.”

On Dinkci’s debut winner:

Florian Kohfeldt: "He's a local boy and comes from a small club in Bremen who do good work with talented youngsters. He trains with the first team regularly and he is characterised by his pace. He's a reserved lad, but I hope he is able to fully enjoy his debut and his debut winning goal today.”

Marco Friedl: "Things couldn't be going better for him at the moment, which makes me very happy. I'm sure he'll get a lot of messages congratulating him.”

Kevin Möhwald: "Eren has already shown his potential in training. This is a very special day that he should enjoy to the fullest. We are all so happy for him and also about the win.”

Maximilian Eggestein: "Eren is a great, down-to-earth guy. He fitted in great today, not only because of his winning goal, but also with his defensive work late on.
