Werder defenders Marco Friedl and Ömer Toprak have undertaken individual training this week, but head coach Florian Kohfeldt is hoping that the pair will both be fit again for Saturday’s match against FC Augsburg (15:30 CEST). In addition to the two centre-backs, Manuel Mbom could also return to the matchday squad for the trip to Bavaria at the weekend. Speaking at Thursday afternoon’s pre-match press conference, Kohfeldt reported: “Ömer and Marco have both trained this week and have handled the strain well. Things are looking good for them. Manuel Mbom should also be back in the squad.”

The three returnees will provide SVW’s head coach with a boost to his defence, however Kohfeldt will have to wait and see whether Milos Veljkovic will be available. A decision on the Serbia international’s fitness will be made by tomorrow, with Veljkovic suffering from a minor injury niggle during the week.

Florian Kohfeldt is not willing to take any risks when it comes to Ömer Toprak, who has been particularly susceptible to injuries lately. The coaching staff have stayed in close contact with the players: “Ömer is a very experienced player and can assess his fitness to a high degree himself. But he’s willing to push himself to the limit to help the team,” stressed Kohfeldt.
