Romano Schmid is back in Bremen: a return that will feel like a new start. The Austrian attacker was signed from RB Salzburg and spent just one month at SV Werder at the start of last year before moving to Wolfsberger AC on loan. The 20-year-old describes this as a “correct and important” step, allowing him to mature and readying him to play in green and white.
The experience gained in 37 competitive games at Wolfsberger AC, including appearances in the Europa League, ought to help the right-footer. “I’ve particularly developed the defensive side of my game this year,” says Schmid, who is nonetheless praised above all for his attacking play. “He plays instinctively and brings great tempo to the side. He will be firmly part of the first team squad here,” explains sporting director Frank Baumann.
That suits the Austrian U21 player nicely, who hopes to “put in good performances” and “take this opportunity.” Werder’s new number 20 may benefit from his versatility, as he is able to play on both wings, in addition to being able to feature as a central or attacking midfielder.
