The executives and players of SV Werder Bremen have settled on an agreement that will see the Bundesliga club’s professional players waive a portion of their salaries. All parties have agreed not to disclose the time frame and amount of the salary waiver.
“We’re glad that we’ve been able to reach a resolution before the start of the season so that we can put this issue to bed. The players came to us with a proposal following several rounds of talks and discussions within the team, and we’ve agreed on that proposal. As a result, the team will make a significant contribution to helping out in the difficult economic times that Werder Bremen finds itself in. This is very positive and will also play an important role in the club’s talks with banks and lenders. Alongside the executive board and the coaching staff, who are also giving up part of their salaries, the players are sending an important message with this salary waiver,” explained sporting director Frank Baumann.
Niklas Moisander, one of the team’s representatives in the talks, reflected on the intensive talks over the last few days: “Through the talks with the executive board, we’ve found out what financial situation the club is in as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. Because of this, we decided within the team that we would make a contribution from our salaries to help Werder Bremen, just like last season. Reaching such a decision requires every player to be onboard, so the decision-making process was not easy, partly because of the international break. But we’re very glad to have found a resolution now.”
