The next international break is just a few weeks away after Werder’s games against Bayern and Wolfsburg. As usual, some of SVW’s players will be named in their national squads, but this once again provides challenges due to the pandemic. “Countries are currently split into four categories: areas with variants of the virus, areas with a high incidence, risk areas and areas that are not currently considered as risks – including Japan,” explained Frank Baumann. The club now have a good idea of which players will be able to feature for their national sides during the international break at the end of March.

“We recently spoke to the respective associations and Bremen’s health authority. We now have a rule whereby we will not allow players to travel to areas where there are variants of the virus because they would then need to quarantine for 14 days. The players can still feature in the other games so there will be more players than the last international break. As things stand, every player who has been called up can play one game,” said Baumann on Friday.

A good example is Jiri Pavlenka. Czech Republic have three World Cup qualifiers scheduled away in Estonia, at home to Belgium and then away to Wales. As Wales and Czech Republic are both countries with variants of the virus, the goalkeeper would only be allowed to play in Estonia on 24.03.21. If Marco Friedl and Romano Schmid are named in Austria’s final squad, they would only be available for home games. A final overview will be announced after the Bundesliga game against Wolfsburg.
