Ludwig Augustinsson has woken up covered in sweat several times this summer, always disturbed by the same nightmare. “I dreamed that I missed the open net,” reveals the left-back, referring to his crucial goal that made it 2-1 in Heidenheim. “A slightly lower shot would have been much better for my heart,” laughed Augustinsson, as he discussed the goal with the media in Zell am Ziller.
But Augustinsson found the target, Werder maintained their Bundesliga status and together the Green-Whites are planning a much less nerve-wracking 2020-21 season. The Swede is aiming to play a major role in this, with no thoughts of a possible transfer: “I’m really happy here at Werder so I haven’t considered any other offers.”
Augustinsson welcomes the arrival of Felix Agu, who will provide stiff competition for both him and Theodor Gebre Selassie on the other side of the defence. The Swede is back to full fitness and is looking to get back to his best down the left flank again. After a knee operation, a muscle strain and a few knocks, he was “not 100% fit and not in his best form” towards the end of last season.
But Augustinsson looks a different man now as he completes every exercise in training alongside his teammates. The 26-year-old is already looking forward to the start of the Bundesliga: “I’m hungry and want to have a better season.”
