SV Werder Bremen have bolstered their ranks ahead of the new season. 18-year-old Johan Mina has joined the club from CS Emelec.

“We’re delighted that we were able to convince Johan to join the club. Johan is an attacking midfielder, a playmaker with an eye for goal. He drew attention to himself with his impressive performances during the South American U-17 Championship, where he established himself as the top scorer of the competition, as well as the U17 World Cup. He was also one of the youngest player to have been called up to Ecuador’s squad for the Olympics. However, once he moves to Germany we will give him enough time to acclimatise here and adapt to European football,” said the sporting director, Frank Baumann. Werder managed to beat a number of European clubs to his signature, who had all shown huge interest in the South American talent.

After making his decision not to commit future to his previous club, Johan Mina made his last competitive appearance for Emelec at the end of 2018. “Since then he had been able to gain match practice with the national teams, but apart from that he only trained. Due to the Coronavirus, he is expected to be able to come to Bremen in July,” Baumann added.

The 18-year-old is looking forward to his next chapter with huge anticipation. “I chose Werder Bremen on purpose because Werder is a good club, that has shown in the past that it’s a good place for South American players to start in Europe. I will definitely need some time to settle in, but I’m really looking forward to my new chapter.”
