Another draw for Werder but it could have been more. SVW have now gone twelve games against Hertha without a loss, despite only taking away a point. 40,000 fans watched an interesting encounter at the wohninvest WESERSTADION due to the high technical quality of both sides. The Green-Whites started the game as the better side, with Josh Sargent giving them the lead in the 7th minute. The hosts struggled to add a second before the interval, so entered the break with the 1-0 lead. The guests then punished Werder’s poor form in front of goal with an equaliser through Dodi Lukebakio 20 minutes from time (70’). Despite an exciting finish to the game, the scoreline remained at 1-1 as the sides shared the points.

Line-up and formation: Florian Kohfeldt named an unchanged side to the team that started in their 2-2 draw with Eintracht Frankfurt two weeks ago. Captained by Davy Klaassen, SVW lined up in a fluid 4-4-2 formation, with Marco Friedl and Theodor Gebre Selassie taking up the full back positions. Milos Veljkovic partnered up with Christian Groß in the heart of the defence for the second week running. Nuri Sahin made his 250th Bundesliga appearance this afternoon as he lined up in the number six position, joined in midfield by Klaassen and Maximilian Eggestein. Leonardo Bittencourt sat just behind the strikers, Josh Sargent and Milot Rashica. Ömer Toprak, Niklas Moisander and Yuya Osako were all unavailable for the game

Werder’s starting XI: Pavlenka, Friedl, Groß, Veljkovic, Gebre Selassie,  Sahin, Klaassen, M. Eggestein, Bittencourt, Sargent, Rashica.

On the bench: Kapino, Lang, Pizarro, J. Eggestein, Langkamp, Goller, Bargfrede.

Composed finish from Sargent

The highlights from the first half:

7th minute: GOAALLL FOR WERDER – Josh Sargent gives us the lead! As easy as you like: Maximilian Eggestein receives the ball from Davy Klaassen on the right hand side and finds the unmarked Sargent at the edge of the box; who remains calm as his strike is deflected into the back of the net. 1-0 Werder!

12th minute: Pavla to the rescue: The first sign of danger for SV Werder. Marius Wolf plays through Vedad Ibisevic who tries to take the ball around Jiri Pavlenka, but Werder’s number one manages to get his foot on it and clear the danger.

27th minute: Almost another one for the hosts: Leo Bittencourt opens up the pitch with a cross-field pass to Marco Friedl. The left back plays Milot Rashica in behind the defence, whose deflected shot narrowly misses the target.

45th minute: Half time in Bremen: An entertaining half of football comes to a close. Werder will aim to double their lead in the second half as they look to secure all three points.

Lukebakio scores, Werder can’t find the back of the net

The highlights from the second half:

62nd minute: Great chance for Werder: Josh Sargent whips a well-hit cross into the box and finds Milot Rashica but he can’t quite get enough power on the ball to cause Rune Jarstein any problems.

64th minute: Another chance for Milot: Milot Rashica again, saved by Jarstein again. The Kosovan winger tries his luck but Hertha’s man between the sticks does well to keep it out.

70th minute: Goal for Hertha BSC: Werder have failed to take their chances and Hertha have made them pay. Dodi Lukebakio takes it past three SVW players, before scoring with a well-struck left-footed strike.

90th minute + 3: Final whistle. Nothing to separate the two sides as they draw 1-1.

Match summary: It was an entertaining game of football at the wohninvest WESERSTADION. Werder made a perfect start to the game, and were rewarded for their efforts in the opening minutes as Josh Sargent gave them the lead (7’). The Green-Whites defended well and moved the ball around the pitch effectively. One of the reasons why the first half was so entertaining to watch was because of the impressive pass accuracy of both teams, as both sides racked up more than a 90% success rate. Overall, SVW were the better side but they struggled to take their chances and ultimately failed to add to their lead. Dodi Lukebakio was then subbed on and Hertha immediately looked much more of a threat, with the substitute breaking through the Bremen defence to score in the 70th minute with a nice finish. Werder tried to grab the winner in the closing minutes of the game, but were ultimately unsuccessful.
