SV Werder Bremen have had to add another name to the injury list. Defensive chief Niklas Moisander will not feature in Saturday’s away match versus Union Berlin (15:30 CEST).
Moisander did not take part in team training this past week. “He picked up a muscle injury during our recovery run after the friendly. After undergoing further tests, we will have to assume that he cannot play. It’s hard to say at this point in time how long he will be out for,” head coach Florian Kohfeldt said during a pre-match press conference.
However, Werder’s internationals “all returned healthy,” Kohfeldt shared, while also highlighting the positive connections to the various national football federations. Josh Sargent and Yuya Osako may be a bit jet lagged after returning from international duty. “I’m assuming that Yuya will be able to play. As for Josh, even though he may have returned late, he’s still very young,” said Kohfeldt.
The head coach also addressed the team’s growing list of injuries, adding that no one is “complaining” and that he will not fill up the squad just for the sake of doing so. Milot Rashica will also have to sit out for a bit longer. “Anyone can see that it’s not a normal situation, but we have decided to not take any unnecessary risks,” Kohfeldt said about potentially having two or three players who are on the brink of return. “This is an extremely important match in Berlin, but I will not sacrifice any players. We will remain calm and need to proceed accordingly.”
What’s certain is that U23 players Simon Straudi and Ilia Gruev will be part of the squad, after having previously been selected to face FC Augsburg.
