The game against SV Darmstadt 98 was exactly the game it was expected considering the 10 days of intensive training in Zillertal in the build-up to it. There were tired legs to begin with, a slow pace, a few errors, good basic skills and lots of substitutions. Florian Kohfeldt had a lot to speak about after the match. Although not everything is in tip-top shape, it’s completely normal at this time in pre-season. In an interview with WERDER.DE, the coach spoke about the squad situation, his impressions after the friendly and the development of the U23 players that have travelled with the team.

Florian Kohfeldt on...

...the squad: “Theodor Gebre Selassie and Niklas Moisander are good. Both trained a bit today and focussed on certain areas. If there was a Bundesliga game today, both could have played. We let them rest today, much like with Ilia Gruev. Theo still has some residual problems from the first game, so we didn’t want him involved in any aerial challenges. Niklas did a bit of work on his adductor muscles. We didn’t want to risk anything getting worse in that situation. It’s not a worrying time for either player, though. Unfortunately Davy Klaassen was also not able to get involved. He’s received a blow to his thigh. The fact that we replaced him was partly due to prevent fatigue, so his situation shouldn’t be a problem.

...the friendly against SV Darmstadt 98: “I saw the 90 minutes as positive overall. You have to look at it in context. Darmstadt played 60 minutes with their Starting XI - who will probably start in their first game against Hamburg. We on the other hand are still missing a few of our players. We also played in certain stages as we made a lot of substitutions. In any case, we learned things about the team that will help us. Our combination play in the centre was very good and I thought we had a lot of chances. Darmstadt were strong in possession, so we have to work on that so we can prevent getting caught on the counter. It was a good friendly. I’m not going to go home now and say that everything is in tip-top shape, since there are small things that we have to work on.”

...the U23 players: “I was very happy with what our youngsters showed out there, especially in comparison to the game one week ago. You have to recognise that the team we played today was a second division side. They did really well. Now we can go away with a good feeling and end the training camp on a high.”
