Head coach Florian Kohfeldt, the team and all of the fans went into the Bundesliga restart against Bayer 04 Leverkusen filled with optimism. However, in the end the result was nothing short of disappointment. Despite the 4-1 defeat against the Werkself, the confidence remains high around the squad that they will pick up the necessary points from the last nine games to ensure their survival, “We won’t let our heads drop, we’re going to do everything we can to turn this around. I’m convinced that we will stay in the division,” said Werder’s head coach in the Friday morning press conference.

There were only just a few days between the home game against Bayer 04 and the upcoming trip to Freiburg on Saturday, leaving only a limited amount of time for preparation. That makes it all the more important to use the time effectively to work on their game. “Against Leverkusen we managed to get into their third on a number of occasions, but we simply weren’t clinical enough,” said Kohfeldt, who has laid emphasis on their attacking play this week. “It makes me confident that our combination play will gives us that extra bit of security. We are creating chances, which is what I wanted.”

However, the head coach is aware that the defensive side of their game is also in need of improvement. “We’ve spoken within the team about the mistakes we made that led to their goals. We also spoke about it a lot in the dressing room. Defensively, we have to adopt the mentality that no one can get past us,” said Kohfeldt, whilst protecting his side, “I don’t think the performance was hopeless, as some people have made it out to be. Up until they made it 3-1 the team fought back and were determined not to be beaten. The last half hour was difficult, but we’ve spoken about that clearly.”

Public criticism, such as that from Kevin Vogt, isn’t a problem for Kohfeldt. “Kevin is allowed to say what he wants. I hope that it has an effect and we see it on the pitch on Saturday. Ultimately it doesn’t matter what it looks like from the outside. The only thing that matters is that we win the game.”
