Nonetheless, the squad believe that it’s the ‘little things’ in their game that decide whether they win or lose. Whether it be down to weaknesses at set pieces, or individual mistakes, it’s all part of a learning process that will “hopefully improve the team overall” in the end, according to Klaassen. It’s important to address each other’s mistakes, but also to support each other. Klaassen also believes that everyone must take responsibility: “I expect myself and the rest of the team to improve these things. If we do that, I believe we can achieve a lot.”
If they manage to do this over the coming weeks then the Dutchman believes Werder will be back on the right track. “We create five to ten good chances every game; that should be enough to win. We never lose faith and are all 100% behind our game plan.”
However, Werder’s current captain believes there may have to be a change in penalty taker. After two missed penalties so far this season, someone else may have to step up to the plate for the next spot kick. However, Klaassen didn’t want to give too much away on the subject: “Perhaps someone else will take the next one. The most important thing is that it goes in.” These are the sorts of things that could be the difference between a win or a loss against Schalke on Saturday (15:30 CEST).
