The Bundesliga will return in mid-September, with the opening weekend taking place from 18th to 21st September 2020. The Green-Whites will begin their competitive season a week prior with the first round of matches in the DFB-Pokal (11th to 14th September 2020). The DFL and DFB announced the start dates for the 2020/21 season on Friday, 10th June.

Werder have yet to announce a decision on when the team will begin pre-season training. "We need to allow for enough recovery time, from a physical point of view," Florian Kohfeldt said during a press conference in which he took stock of the past season. "The last few months were very mentally straining. We will find the right balance between sufficient preparation for a challenging season with several double game weeks, and a summer break where we can recover mentally."

The DFB-Pokal will end the year with a second round of fixtures on 22nd-23rd December 2020. Meanwhile, there will be 13 Bundesliga matchdays played before a shortened winter break. The league will resume on the first weekend in January (2nd-4th January 2021). Matchday 34 will be played on 22nd May, 2021, with the DFB-Pokal final taking place on Saturday, 13th May 2021.
