After the 2-0 home win on Friday evening, SV Werder have climbed the table to second. The Green-Whites are still keeping their feet on the ground though. “We are so happy that we are back at the top after all these years, but the season has only really just begun,” said Florian Kainz. Head coach Florian Kohfeldt is “satisfied” with the team’s start to the season, but doesn’t want to place too much importance on it: “We will carry on doing what we do and won’t start comparing ourselves with the teams who play in the Champions League. With all respect, we’ve only played seven games.“

On the game:

Davy Klaassen: “It definitely wasn’t a perfect game from us. Wolfsburg were strong at the back and made it hard to break them down. As a result, the goal before the break was vital and the second at the end was equally useful.”

Johannes Eggestein: “We already experienced how frustrating it is to concede a late equaliser at home to Nürnberg. I’m pleased we managed to see the game out this time. You have to win these kinds of games if you want to be near the top of the table.”

Florian Kainz: “It was a difficult game and real hard work. We didn’t start that well and only got going after 20 minutes. The goal was extremely important. We were too defensive and deep in the second half, and should have been more effective on the counter. Nevertheless, we are happy to have won this game in front of our fans.”

Max Kruse: “Wolfsburg put in a good away performance tonight. They studied us well before the game and it took us half an hour to sort ourselves out. At the moment we have a knack of scoring goals at the right times. We also got it right with the subs tonight.”

Florian Kohfeldt: “It wasn’t our best game, but you can’t forget the quality of the opponent. They played very well and got their tactics spot on. It was difficult to defend against them as well. We took time to get into the game, had a bit of luck and then got our goal. Afterwards we should have we really doubled our lead. The lads showed tonight that they are capable of overcoming difficult phases in games and that they can react to changes too.”

On Werder’s points total:

Max Kruse: “We are pleased with our points return so far and feel that we are playing some good football. But we also know that the season is long. It’ll be nice if we can be towards the top at the end though. “

Florian Kainz: “We are so happy that we are back at the top after all these years, especially when we have been lower down the table in recent years and only picked up in the second half of the season, something I have always had here since signing. All these points gained so far will give us plenty of confidence.”

Davy Klaassen: “It’s great that we won today and that we are so high in the table. We can now sit back and relax and see how the other teams around us get on.”

Florian Kohfeldt: “The table doesn’t mean a lot to us at the moment. After this matchday the beginning of the season is now over and to have 14 points so far is very satisfying. We have been up and down the table, but we will continue to grow. We can still improve on our performances.

On Johannes Eggestein’s goal:

Max Kruse: “Jojo is a product of the youth academy, and I know myself that that’s not easy. He really cracked on and absolutely deserves to be on the pitch. In the last few weeks, there’s even been the possibility of him starting. It’s nice that he scored today.”

Florian Kainz: “I’m happy for Jojo. It was a great run and a great finish – just a great goal. He showed his quality.”

Florian Kohfeldt: “It was a moment that he’s work very hard for. I’m so happy for him, he’s a great lad. We had to protect him because the expectations put on him were so high. People thought that he would come in as a teenager and tear the whole Bundesliga apart. That’s nonsense – I can’t really think of another word.”
