SV Werder Bremen will hold a winter training camp in Africa for the first time. In co-operation with the DFL, they will prepare for the second half of the season between the 3rd and 12th January 2019 in South Africa.
“We were in Johannesburg a few weeks ago and were impressed by the facilities at the location,” explained sporting director Frank Baumann. The Green-Whites will be based at the “Fairway Hotel”, which hosted the Brazilian national side during the 2010 World Cup. Kohfeldt’s team will train at Randburg FC’s training ground.
“The conditions should be good for training in, especially the weather for that time of the year,” praised head coach Kohfeldt, who also plans to face at least one local team in a friendly during the trip. Werder haven’t just chosen the location for sporting reasons: “The Bundesliga is very popular in South Africa. As part of this trip, we want to make sure we help to make Werder and the Bundesliga more well-known out there,” stated Klaus Fibry, CEO of the club, who wants Bremen to show a strong presence off the pitch as well. “There are other interesting projects which we would like to support the DFL with, for example we are planning to visit Amandla’s Safe-Hub project in South Africa too.”
African media will also film the Green-Whites in action during the training camp. StarTimes (StarSat), which has been a TV partner of the Bundesliga since the 2015/16 season, and Soccer Laduma, which is the Bundesliga's digital partner in Africa, will accompany Werder on their trip.
