After the last minute victory against Eintracht Frankfurt on the weekend, our next game is quickly upon us. Due to the international break, Werder now have two weeks to prepare intensively for their next Bundesliga game against 1.FC Nürnberg. Werder will play a friendly against newly promoted Eredivisie team FC Emmen.  The match will kick-off at 18:30 CEST and the match will take place in the Hoheellern stadium in Leer.

The first time? The game against Eintracht Frankfurt came too soon for Nuri Sahin. The new signing only signed his contract with Werder on Friday evening and therefore he could not train with the team before the game. However, the game against FC Emmen could be the debut he has been waiting for. “The fans will want to see Nuri in a Werder jersey for the first time in our friendly in Leer,” said the Werder head coach. Sahin himself is full of confidence and raring to go. “I will bring experience and quality to the team and I hope I can help the team,” the 29-year-old said. Nevertheless, he will face competition to get a starting place in midfield. “You have competition everywhere, but it’s a good thing,” said Sahin.

Emmen’s history: Emmen football club was founded in 1925 as Noordbarge Emmen Combinatie. However, since 2005 and after several name changes, the club from Drente are now called FC Emmen. Since 1985, for 33 years, the club have played in the second division in the Netherlands. Nevertheless, in 2018, thanks to the play-off system, the team surprisingly were promoted to the Eredivisie for the first time in their history. Emmen were only in seventh place in the table but it was enough as they won in the play-offs to achieve promotion.

Euphoria: On the 20th May 2018, FC Emmen faced Sparta Rotterdam in a promotion play-off. They eventually won 3-1 and secured promotion into the Eredivisie. They went into the new season full of confidence, and managed to win their first game of the new season, 2-1 away at ADO Den Haag. However, since then they have suffered two humbling defeats; firstly 1-4 at home to AZ Alkmaar, and then 0-5 against Ajax. They managed to draw against De Graafschap on matchday 4, which has left them 14th in the table with 4 points going into the game with Werder.
