“We’re all really excited for the match. We all love the DFB-Pokal,” Florian Kohfeldt appeared really keen in Tuesday’s press conference. SV Werder Bremen will face SC Weiche Flensburg 08 in the second round of the DFB-Pokal. “Proceeding to the next round is our main priority,” explains sporting director Frank Baumann, adding “Our aim is to go really far in the DFB-Pokal. We’ll approach the game tomorrow fully focused.” The match is scheduled to kick off at 18:30 CET on Wednesday (31st October 2018) in Lübeck. Read on to find out why Florian Kohfeldt’s team can travel with high hopes.

Werder in the cup: Every football fan in Germany knows that Werder are a real cup team. The Green-Whites have participated in a total of ten finals to date, taking back the trophy on six of those occasions. The last cup win came in 2009, when Werder beat Bayer Leverkusen 1-0 in Berlin in the final. However, along with all the successes, has come the odd slip-up. Over the last eight years, the Green-Whites have exited the competition in the first round four times. The team ended this curse with a triumphant 6-1 victory in Worms this year. The omens are good for the second round of the cup too. Werder have never been knocked out of the competition by a fourth-tier side, such as Wednesday’s opponents. In the 13 previous matches against fourth-tier sides, Werder have racked up 70 goals, whilst conceding only ten.

Florian Kohfeldt on the match: “The DFB-Pokal is an extremely important competition for us as a team,” explains the head coach during the official press conference. According to Kohfeldt, the fact that a fourth-division team await Werder in the second round is no reason to change anything about how the team go about preparing for the match. “We’ve been preparing for this match in exactly the same way we would for a Bundesliga match, with lots of video material,” says Kohfeldt. The coach is expecting the opponents to man-mark in midfield and to play “long balls which loop over the midfield”. He is hoping to see a clear improvement from his team after the last Bundesliga game. “I hope that we can play with confidence, that we’re awake and that we’re really keen to attack. Securing a safe win would be the right way to react,” says Kohfeldt.

Squad update: Head coach Florian Kohfeldt will not have Niklas Moisander and Philipp Bargfrede available for selection on Wednesday evening. The game against SC Weiche Flensburg 08 comes too early for both players. Apart from the long-term injuries, Moisander and Bargfrede, Florian Kohfeldt has the entire squad at his disposal. “They all lasted well in the game against Leverkusen and are fit for selection,” explained the head coach on Tuesday at the press conference.

Lübeck: Normally, SC Weiche Flensburg 08 play their home games in the Manfred-Werner-Stadion. However, the current weather conditions won’t allow any floodlit games to take place in the stadium in the evenings. The technical requirements for the mobile floodlights cannot be satisfied as the stormy winds in Flensburg have overstepped the specific limit. As a result, the match will take place 170km away in Lübeck.

The opponents: Weiche Flensburg are real ‘newcomers’ to the DFB-Pokal. Today’s SC Weiche 08 Flensburg was founded just over a year ago in July 2017 through a merger of ETSV Weiche and Flensburg 08. The new team won the regional cup right off the bat in their first season and therefore qualified for the DFB-Pokal. The fourth-division side registered a surprise win in the first round, beating VfL Bochum 1-0. Kevin Schulz scored the winning goal against the Bundesliga 2 side in the 34th minute. SC Weiche Flensburg 08 currently sit third in the Regionalliga Nord. Last Friday, the team lost 3-1 to VfB Lübeck, where Wednesday’s DFB-Pokal game between Flensburg and Werder will also take place.
