With eleven points from five matches, SV Werder Bremen are enjoying the best start to a Bundesliga season for seven years. "We can win anywhere," pronounced Frank Baumann. This is a strong statement to the rest of the league. "The important thing is that we believe that we are difficult to bit. That will show opponents that it’s difficult to get points against us," added the club’s sporting director. The Green-Whites will be hoping to carry this confidence into Saturday’s match at the Mercedes-Benz Arena (29.08.2018, 15:30 CEST), where they will be hoping to add three more points to the board against VfB Stuttgart.

The last meeting: When the two sides met at the Weserstadion – where Florian Kohfeldt has yet to lose a match as head coach – on matchday 14 last season, it was Werder who ran out 1-0 winners. Fin Bartels provided the assist for Max Kruse, who scored the only goal of the game shortly before the break. But things didn’t go so smoothly when the two teams met on matchday 31, with Stuttgart taking all the points in a 2-0 win.

The head coach’s view: The two sides couldn’t be further apart on form, as although Werder are unbeaten this season, Stuttgart continue their search for a first victory. But form has no impact on preparations according to Kohfeldt. "We are expecting them to have their best performance of the season. Last year they were still very cautious to keep things compact and close off space. This year they are more attack-minded," he told. Stuttgart are a team with "high-quality players in every area.” Benjamin Pavard, Santiago Ascasibar and Mario Gomez are just some of the names that came up. "Despite that, it’s our job to go to Stuttgart and play our game," demands Kohfeldt, adding: “we want to have the ball, be dominant on the pitch and create chances. Recent games have shown what we are capable of doing."

Squad news: "Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday – it has been a busy week due to the midweek fixtures, but fortunately Kohfeldt has every player at his disposal for the game.“We have no knocks from the last game. Everyone that was available against Hertha will train," Kohfeldt explains. Nuri Sahin, who suffered a dead leg midweek, and Theodor Gebre Selassie (knock to the foot), are fit.

It couldn’t be more even: History makes this one a tricky game to predict. 102 times the two clubs have met in the Bundesliga with 35 wins apiece and 32 draws. Werder have their noses in front in terms of goals scored, with 176 strikes – their best record against any Bundesliga side. The Green-Whites have only lost two of their last ten games against Stuttgart, but have only won once in their last seven in the Mercedes-Benz Arena.

Stuttgart’s poor form: Whilst Werder are enjoying life towards the top of the table, Stuttgart are in 17th place, having not really got going yet after a strong finish to last season. Tayfun Korkut’s team are yet to win this season, with two draws and three defeats after five games. The last time that Stuttgart went more than five Bundesliga games without a win was in 2015/16, when they were relegated from the top tier. The side are having problems up front as well as in defence, having scored their only goals of the season so far in a 3-3 draw with SC Freiburg.

The officials: Tobias Welz will referee the game, with Rafael Foltyn and Dr. Martin Thomsen running the line. Christian Gittelman is the fourth official, whilst Tobias Stieler and Dr. Matthias Jöllenbeck are the video assistants for the game.
