Fourth against second. Eight points against ten points. SV Werder against Hertha BSC. When the ball gets rolling tomorrow at 18:30 CEST, two unbeaten teams will square off against each other in the Weser-Stadion. A battle between two teams destined for the top, then? “It’s still too early to talk about things like that,” says head coach Florian Kohfeldt. Nevertheless, Kohfeldt certainly wants his team to utilize the momentum gained after the wild 3-2 win against FC Augsburg in order to finally give the fans their first home win of the season. It will be no easy task to achieve that against Hertha BSC, although they have been a favourite opponent of the Green-Whites recently. Not only are Werder on a 14-game unbeaten run in the Bundesliga, but they’ve also won eight of their last 10 clashes with Hertha on the Weser.

Last season’s head to head: Goalless run ended, first point secured. On the third matchday of last season, SV Werder were the visitors at the Olympiastadion in Berlin. After two losses in a row to kick off the campaign, the Green-Whites battled to a 1-1 draw with Hertha to earn their first point. While Mathew Leckie gave the home side the lead in the first half, Thomas Delaney got one back in the second. The rematch on matchday 20 also ended in a draw. However, the game was a completely different affair. A mere 10 minutes had been played when the home fans in the Weser-Stadion erupted in celebration, but after consultation with the video assistant, Maxi Eggestein’s goal was disallowed. The game would end 0-0, and Werder would go their fifth game unbeaten under Florian Kohfeldt.

Kohfeldt on the game: There are a tough 90 minutes of work ahead for Werder when Hertha come to town. “We’re playing against a very strong team. Hertha act very intelligently. They let their opponents make mistakes and wait for the right moment to pounce,” explains Florian Kohfeldt. “Generally, they don’t press very high. But they also don’t just set up shop in their own box either.” For Werder, it will be about generating the right balance. Specifically, finding the necessary space in attack and defending compactly at the back. A particular point of emphasis will be consistency. “It’s extremely difficult to dominate a game for 90 minutes. But it’s our job to try and do exactly that,” clarifies Kohfeldt.

Spoilt for choice: Good injury news on the Weser. Florian Kohfeldt will have both Yuya Osako and Sebastian Langkamp available for selection, barring anything unforeseen. Things are also looking good for other players in the squad. Despite the high workload that comes with the midweek games, “there is almost no reason to rotate,” explains Kohfeldt. Nevertheless, the head coach is spoilt for choice once again. “Now it’s about selecting the best possible side to face Hertha,” said Kohfeldt in his press conference before the game. But he doesn’t want to lay his cards on the table just yet. “It might be that a few players who were in action on the weekend don’t play this time around. It could also be that the same eleven starts the game.” In short: wait and see.

New record holder? It’s been the same story since October of last year: Bundesliga teams come to Bremen again and again to try and beat SV Werder. But no one has managed it since Florian Kohfeldt took the reins. The list has grown to 14 teams in that time and the unbeaten streak is also at 14 games. Only Otto Rehhagel has managed the feat before. If the Green-Whites manage to avoid defeat against Hertha, the Werder coach will be the new all-time record holder.

Record breaking start: Win against Nürnberg, win against Schalke, draw against Wolfsburg, win against Mönchengladbach. Hertha have made their best start to a Bundesliga season in the history of the club. ”They played brilliantly this weekend against Gladbach,” analyses Kohfeldt, who has been looking closely at their recent rise. “They’ve clearly come a long way since last season and they are a lot more versatile in their play,” says the Werder head coach. It hasn’t come as a surprise to Sebastian Langkamp, however, who was under contract at Hertha for four-and-a-half years. “Ever since Pal Dardai took over, they’ve been on a constant upward trajectory,” says Werder’s centre back. “They’ve developed exceptionally well. The quality is there and they can’t be underestimated, but you also can’t put too much stock in positions in the table at this point in the season.”

The home record: It makes for very good reading! When the Berlin club make the trip to the Weser, it’s normally the Werder fans who leave the happier. Out of 35 games played at the Weser-Stadion, SV Werder left the pitch as victors on 25 occasions. Four games ended in draws, while Hertha have won four times. The last home loss to Hertha BSC came all the way back in March 2006. Since then, it’s been eight wins and two draws for Werder at home. Hopefully, that exceptional run can continue this week.
