In the 26th minute of the game against Nürnberg, Maxi Eggestein scored a wonder goal. He got the ball out of his feet before smashing a magnificent shot beyond the Fabian Bredlow in the goal. “It was unstoppable,” said the Werder midfielder after the game. “You can’t expect a goal like that, but I wanted to get it on target. I managed that quite well,” added Eggestein.

With his goal at the weekend and his assist for Yuya Osako against Eintracht Frankfurt, Eggestein is joint-top of Werder’s goal and assists table with Milot Rashica. However, the midfielder isn’t satisfied. Werder’s No. 35 has been playing well for weeks now and was one of the best players on the pitch in the first half against Nürnberg. The late equaliser caused a lot of disappointment, however: “We had to win the game. Two points from two home games are not enough.”

It’s not only the club that wants to improve its standing this year; Eggestein wants to improve on a personal level. Last season, he scored two Bundesliga goals. How many will he get this time out? “More than last year, at least five,” he answered. The midfielder isn’t just ambitious; he’s also versatile. This is a positive for both his managers, both at club level and internationally.

Eggestein has been a regular with Germany Under-21s since his debut in September 2017. During the recent international break, he played in both games and got two assists. The midfielder now has seven Under-21 caps to his name. “He has both tactical discipline and a good instinct for finding space to punish our opponents,” said Germany U21 coach Stefan Kuntz. Eggestein says that it’s an honour to play for the national team: “You should always be honoured to play for your country,” the midfielder added. Going forward, he would love to score more goals like his effort against Nürnberg.
