Maximilian Eggestein successfully qualified for the 2019 U21 European Championship on Friday evening in a 2-1 victory against Norway. The U21s needed two points from their remaining two qualifiers to guarantee their ticket to the tournament in Italy and San Marino. Stefan Kuntz’s team made it clear in their performance against Norway that they wanted to qualify with a game to spare. Werder’s Maximilian Eggestein played the full 90 minutes, while his brother Johannes, called up after Augsburg’s Marco Richter withdrew from the squad due to injury, did not feature.

Yuya Osako enjoyed similar success in his first match of the international break. Werder’s number 8 started for Japan in their comfortable 3-0 friendly win against Panama. Yuya was substituted after 66 minutes in the Japanese city of Niigata, his 34th international game after taking part in the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Florian Kainz made his 11th international appearance in Austria’s 1-0 victory over Northern Ireland. The Werder winger came on in the 82nd minute for Schalke’s Guido Burgstaller, helping to guarantee Austria’s first points in the UEFA Nations League. After two games, Kainz and co. now have three points, and are behind Bosnia-Herzegovina in second place in Group 3.

Werder’s young left-back Jan-Niklas Beste didn’t feature however, remaining on the bench in the U20s’ friendly against the Netherlands. Nevertheless, the 19-year-old could feature in the team’s next fixture on Tuesday against Switzerland (KO 16:00 CEST).
