Another Bundesliga matchday, another game that Werder haven’t lost. The Green-Whites remain unbeaten and have won their first match at home this season, scoring three goals in the process. It is a good time to be a Werder fan at the moment.  However, the coaches and management team remain objectively calm as they aim to continue the good start.

“The foundations are in place for us to reach our main goal this season, which is to play in Europe next season. However, this foundation doesn’t help you if you stop working towards your goal,” explained Werder Bremen sporting director Frank Baumann, who accurately described the current situation at the Weser-Stadion. “We cannot get distracted by our league position. We are concentrating on our next games. I believe that Wolfsburg and Stuttgart are teams of a similar standard to us so it certainly won’t be easy to win these games,” added Baumann. Werder “will do that they can to win.”

Werder head coach Florian Kohfeldt has had no time to examine the Bundesliga table. “The current league position doesn’t influence any of our everyday work. It is important to remain concentrated on the game ahead of us and win as many points as possible.”

The reality is that Werder currently lie in third place, and not a dream. The 35-year-old head coach understands this: “Personally, I don’t think it is surprising that that we are so high up in the table at the moment. We are concentrating hard on Saturday and our training is being rewarded. After only five matchdays, we are still a long way from achieving our goal for the season.”

The Green-Whites do not regard themselves as favourites for the match at VfB Stuttgart on Saturday (15:30 CEST). “I’m not worried about that. It would be very unusual to go into an away match as the favourites. Nevertheless, we have the aspiration to take the game in Stuttgart into our own hands, to create chances and to be the dominant team on the pitch,” said Kohfeldt as he summarised his preparations for the match against the Swabians. There is a big opportunity for Werder to collect three more points and continue their good start to the season on Saturday.
