Werder left back Ludwig Augustinsson and the Sweden national team have been knocked out of the World Cup quarterfinals by England. The 2-0 defeat to the Three Lions saw Augustinsson play his fifth game of the tournament and it remains the Swedes’ best World Cup since 1994.

Central defender Harry Maguire headed England in front on the half hour mark, before Dele Alli doubled the lead in the second half. Sweden were unable to find a response at the other end to beat English keeper Jordan Pickford.

Werder‘s Augustinsson can take positive memories home from the tournament, however. After scoring in the 3-0 win against Mexico, he was named FIFA’s Man of the Match. The 24-year-old will now enjoy a well-earned summer break before eventually joining up with the squad for pre-season.
