Match summary: The teams were trying to feel each other out for the first 20 minutes or so, but both sides seemed well set up defensively. Max Kruse punished Villarreal’s first mistake of the game, finishing from Kainz’s pass. The captain had a good game, often dropping deep into midfield. Werder were bailed out a couple of times by their goalkeeper, with Pavlenka saving from Castillejo and Gerard. However, he was finally beaten just after half time. Villarreal started to attack more in the second half, but it was mistakes from Bremen players that led to the goals. In the final few minutes, the game was turned on its head after Morlanes cancelled out Osaka’s equaliser.
