Werder Bremen were beaten 3-2 by Villarreal in their final friendly before the season begins with the DFB-Pokal next weekend. Max Kruse gave Werder a first-half lead in front of 24,781 fans on Fan Day at the Weserstadion, but Villarreal turned things around after the break. Two goals from Karl Toko Ekambi put Villarreal in front, before Yuya Osako’s header leveled things up again. The goal was set up perfectly by Claudio Pizarro, but it didn’t last long. Just seconds before the final whistle, Manuel Morlanes scored the winner for the visitors, who finished fifth in La Liga last season.

Line-up and formation: Head coach Florian Kohfeldt said “no experiments” in the build-up to his team’s final pre-season game, and went for a 4-3-3 formation. Jiri Pavlenka started in goal, with Milos Veljkovic and Niklas Moisander in central defence. Theodor Gebre Selassie and Ludwig Augustinsson started at full-back. Philipp Bargfrede was given a defensive midfield role, with Maximilian Eggestein and Davy Klaassen just in front of him. Newly-appointed captain Max Kruse started up front, with Florian Kainz and Milot Rashica either side of him.

45+1 mins: Half time at the Weserstadion.

88 mins: GOAL for Werder – Yuya Osako. 2-2. The Green-Whites equalise! Claudio Pizarro, who’s only been on the pitch for around ten minutes, clips the ball into the box for Osako to head in. Great goal!

90+1 mins: Goal for Villarreal – Manuel Morlanes. 2-3. Nahuel turns two defenders in the Bremen penalty area before finding Morlanes, who gives Pavlenka no chance. Seconds later, referee Harm Osmers blows the final whistle.

Match summary: The teams were trying to feel each other out for the first 20 minutes or so, but both sides seemed well set up defensively. Max Kruse punished Villarreal’s first mistake of the game, finishing from Kainz’s pass. The captain had a good game, often dropping deep into midfield. Werder were bailed out a couple of times by their goalkeeper, with Pavlenka saving from Castillejo and Gerard. However, he was finally beaten just after half time. Villarreal started to attack more in the second half, but it was mistakes from Bremen players that led to the goals. In the final few minutes, the game was turned on its head after Morlanes cancelled out Osaka’s equaliser.
