It was goals galore as SV Werder beat third division side SV Meppen 5-2 in a friendly during the international break. Centre-forward Claudio Pizarro was the star man in front of the 2,524 spectators in Cloppenburg. The Peruvian was directly involved in four of the goals. He scored in the 4th and 90th minutes and also got two assists, on the 18-minute mark for Yuya Osako and then again in the 76th minute for Josh Sargent. Werder U19 player Pascal Hackethal also got a goal in the 76th minute following an assist from Davy Klaassen.

Line-up and formation: Head coach Florian Kohfeldt made three changes to the XI that started last Thursday’s friendly. 18-year-old Henry Rorig played at right-back, whilst Niklas Moisander started at his usual position in the centre of defence alongside Sebastian Langkamp. The left-back position was occupied by Thore Jacobsen. Luca Plogmann was back between the sticks. Yuya Osako came in ahead of the injured Kevin Möhwald. The attacking midfielder was joined by Davy Klaassen. Nuri Şahin controlled things from the centre of midfield. The front three was made up of Josh Sargent, captain Max Kruse and Claudio Pizarro.

Poor defence from Meppen hands SVW the lead.

The highlights:

5 mins: GOOAALLL, Claudio Pizarro gives SVW the lead: Meppen’s goalie Domaschke could only stand and watch as a defensive error sees the ball come spinning into his box. An astute Pizarro collects the ball and manages to turn into the back of the net from just a few metres out

18 mins: GOOALLL, 2-0 to Werder thanks to Yuya Osako:A free-kick from captiain Kruse sees the ball come flying into the box to Pizarro at the back post. The Peruvian skilful stops the ball going out and plays it into Osako for an easy tap-in.

28 min: Meppen go close when a well struck free-kick hits the bar.

36 mins: Pizarro, despite being surrounded by three defenders, manages to dribble into the box and get a shot away. The powerful low effort is turned round the post by Domaschke.

90 mins: GOOOALLLL, Pizarro gets his second, 5-2: In a crazy last 15 minutes Werder’s record goalscorer gets another when he heads in a cross.

90+1 mins: Full time.

Summary: Meppen’s defensive errors meant Werder could make sure of an early advantage. Going forward it was predominantly Claudio Pizarro who was causing problems for the Meppen back line. The Peruvian’s commitment paid off in the form of goals and assists. Throughout most of the first half, Werder were in control. SVW were commanding on and off the ball, combing well to stop Meppen attacks and putting together some smart phases of play. However, in the second half, a certain degree of passivity slipped into Werder’s game. They were punished with another goal from Meppen. Going forward though, Werder remained cool in front of goal and the last 15 minutes turned into target practice for SVW. Further goals from Hackethal, Sargent and Pizarro secured the win.
