Friendly on Friday evening. In an entertaining game with lots of opportunities from both sides, Werder Bremen had the upper hand at VfL Osnabrück, the current leader of the third division, and eventually won the game 2-1. In front of the 3,984 fans in attendance, Kevin Möhwald put the Green-Whites in front before the break with a brilliant shot from the edge of the box (25’). After the restart, the hosts dominatied the action and soon found a breakthrough with Bashkim Renneke (52’). However, Werder struck again with what would turn out to be the decisive goal as Jonah Osabutey met Christian Gross’ cross with his head and nodded the ball over the line (70’).

Lineup and formation: Even though a number of Werder players were away with their respective national sides and Philipp Bargfrede and Martin Harnik were left out, head coach Florian Kohfeldt still had an illustrious starting lineup to fall back on. In front of goalkeeper Jaroslav Drobny was the four-man setup of Thore Jacobsen, Sebastian Langkamp, Niklas Moisander and Marco Friedl. In midfield was Nuri Sahin, who led the diamond, with Kevin Möhwald and Fridolin Wagner, while Davy Klaassen was was behind forwards Claudio Pizarro and captain Max Kruse.

The Green-Whites were hosted by a confident side. If Jaroslav Drobny had not been in the right mindset in the Bremen box at the start of the match, VfL could have easily taken the lead, especially with the chances from Luca Pfeiffer (6’,19’). Werder were too deliberate at the very start of the match, with little fluidity, however quickly grew into the game. The pass and positional play from the visitors became more consistent and progressive with every minute. Numerous well-combined Bremen chances then came as a result. The only downside was that Bremen probably should have scored more after Kevin Möhwald put them in the lead. Thus, Osnabrückern were in arm’s reach of pulling the game level after the break, which they did. Werder were pushed into their own half a lot in the second half and had to once again thank Drobny for the scoreline. The forwards responded in the best way possible to reward their goalkeeper’s fine efforts, as Jonah Osabutey scored with the best Bremen attack of the second half.

Head coach Florian Kohfeldt on…

…his feelings on the friendly:

“I was very happy with the first half. We had nice interplay, good quality with our passes and lots of efforts on goal straight from the off. After the break, we lost our rhythm a bit and made too many mistakes. However that’s no criticism of the boys, we have changed a lot in today’s game and tried new things. The boys now have three days off but will get an individal plan for their long weekend.”

…Kevin Möhwald:

“I’m very excited for Kevin. The goal and the 90 minutes will certainly help him.”

…Jaroslav Drobny:

“The old man hasn’t lost it and had a super game. Drobo, despite his age, increases his quality everyday in training.”
