The mini-tournament in Essen wasn’t short of quality, as Real Betis from La Liga, Huddersfield town of the Premier League and hosts Rot-Weiss Essen lined up alongside Werder. First up for the Green-Whites was a semi-final against the supposedly easiest team of the tournament, the hosts. However, things didn’t go according to plan for SVW in the first game as they lost 1-0 to set up a third-place play off with Huddersfield Town. The second match did, however, have a happier ending for Kohfeldt’s side. Florian Kainz netted the only goal of the 45-minute game with a fantastic direct free kick.

Line-up: In the semi-final against Rot-Weiss Essen, youth players Luca Plogmann and Manuel Mbom were included in the starting XI, while Kohfeldt also gave youngsters Johannes Eggestein and Ole Käuper game time. In the third-place play-off, some more established Green-Whites lined up, with Maximilian Eggestein and Theodor Gebre Selassie coming in.

1-0 loss to a courageous Essen side

The highlights:

2nd minute:
RWE aren’t shying away from the encounter. Right-back Heber crosses into the box and finds teammate Baier on the penalty spot. His header is, however, no problem for Plogmann, who holds on to the effort.

7th minute: Heber causes more problems for the Green-White defence. The agile RB again breaks down the right-hand side and is stopped unfairly by Marco Friedl. The resulting free kick is cleared by Werder.

9th minute: Goal for the hosts. Benjamin Baier scores with a low shot from distance. Essen play the ball with tempo to the SVW box and Baier tries his luck from the right around 20 yards out. His shot goes low into the left-hand corner of the net. 1-0 to Essen.

11th minute:
Mbom with a great chance to equalise. Kruse attacks down the right and finds Mbom on the penalty spot. The youngster shoots first time but his effort misses the left upright by millimetres.

19th minute: Eggestein goes close with a header! Kruse whips in a corner from the left and Eggestein rises highest in the area, unfortunately, the 20 year old can’t nod the ball on target.

23rd minute: One after the other, Käuper and Mbom both go into a couple of challenges strongly and see yellow cards brandished their way.

27th minute: Milot Raschica fires in a powerful shot from 16 yards out, which forces Raedler in the Essen goal into a great save with both fists.

30th minute: SVW miss another brilliant chance to equalise. Kruse receives a lofted pass in the box and sees that Raedler is slightly off his line. The Green-White number ten tries to lift the ball over the goalkeeper but his effort lands wide of the goal by just a few centimetres.

41st minute: Friedl is stopped at the last second! Moisander finds the Werder left-back, who just has one opponent to beat, but the Austrian can’t get the better of his man and is tackled.

45th minute: A spectacular save from Plogmann. Baier again tries his luck from distance, and his strike is on its way into the top left corner of the goal before Plogmann stretches to deny the hosts a second.

46th minute: Full time. The hosts started the match better and capitalised early on their dominance. Werder did grow into the game but missed their chances, so Baier’s impressive strike was the difference in the end

Spectacular Kainz free-kick

14th minute: The Kruse-Harnik duo again gets the start, and Kruse feeds his strike partner for a shot from the right around 12 yards out, but the new Werder man finishes wide.

22nd minute: Harnik with another chance but again he can’t finish it off. This time it was Eggestein who found him from the left with a low cross.

27th minute: What a strike! Florian Kainz bends a free kick from the edge of the box into the top corner! No chance for the Huddersfield goalkeeper.

33rd minute:
Raschica with the next big chance. He flies past the last man and shoots from an angle with his right foot, but he fires his effort over the bar.

45th minute: Full time! Werder secure third place with a 1-0 over English top-flight side Huddersfield Town.

Summary: Werder showed two very different sides to themselves in the mini-tournament. in the first game against the hosts Rot-Weiss Essen, the Green-Whites didn’t execute what they had planned, leaving head coach Florian Kohfeldt to watch on disappointedly from the sidelines. In the third-place play-off, SVW put in a better performance and carved out more goal-scoring chances. In that game, it was Florian Kainz who netted the decisive goal from a free kick and sealed his side’s third-place finish in the 2018 Interwetten Cup.

Reactions to the tournament

Florian Kohfeldt: “I’m extremely unhappy with the first game. We didn’t do what we had discussed beforehand. I won’t accept the excuse of having ‘tired legs’ despite the short recovery time. Ultimately, we want to make progress here. After the game, we discussed things thoroughly in the changing room. Against Huddersfield, we did what we had planned which pleases me.”
