Werder Bremen have won their friendly in the SchücoArena. The match was the final dress rehearsal for Arminia Bielefeld before the Bundesliga 2 season kicks off for Jeff Saibene’s team next weekend. There weren’t many surprises to report in the starting line-up for the hosts. Werder’s starting XI, however, included new signing Davy Klaassen. The Dutchman made his debut in Kohfeldt’s team and was named in the starting line-up.

Formation: Head coach Florian Kohfeldt sent the team out with a 4-3-3 line-up with Luca Plogmann in goal and Niklas Moisander leading the defence. Debutant Klaassen played in midfield alongside Bargfrede and Eggestein, while Max Kruse, Martin Harnik and Florian Kainz played up front for the Green-Whites.

Dream debut for Klaassen

Highlights:

9th minute: A very short pass back from Gebre Selassie to Plogmann, which is cleared just in time.

15th minute: Ortega sends the ball wide of the target from a corner and the ball finds Massimo, but Plogmann keeps the danger out with a header.

17th minute: First big chance for Werder! Kainz puts through a nice pass to Kruse, who isn’t able to control the ball, however. Ortega gets rid of the danger.

30th minute: Big chance for Bielefeld! Hatherz sends the ball to Seufert, who is completely open. Plogamann isn’t the one to deny him this time, but rather the post; the woodwork prevents the goal and the match remains 0-0.

39th minute: GOOOOAAAALLL! 1-0 to Werder! Kruse sends the ball into the box from the right and finds Harnik who passes the ball on with a spectacular backheel pass. Klaassen is in the right place at the right time to put the ball in the back of the net and scores on his debut for Werder!

45th minute: Half-time! Referee Storks blows the half-time whistle promptly and Werder go into the changing rooms with a 1-0 lead thanks to Davy Klaassen’s goal.

A lot of changes, a lot of tackles

Highlights:

51st minute: Misspass from Bargfrede! One of the hosts’ forwards sprints onto the loose ball and takes aim at goal! However, Plogmann maintains his clean sheet.

54th minute: Rashica passes to Maxi Eggestein, but he can’t quite finish.

68th minute: Good chance for Arminia. Schütz gets a shot in after a mistake in the box, but can’t find the target to grab an equaliser.

76th minute: Möhwald tries his luck from a direct free kick, but only finds the outside netting.

90th minute: Full time! Werder win 1-0 in Bielefeld through a debut goal from Davy Klaassen and dominated for most of the match, but both sides failed to make the most of many opportunities.

Summary: In a match filled with attacking efforts from both teams, Werder Bremen come away 1-0 winners against Bielefeld. Davy Klaassen, the new signing from Everton, was the scorer of the only goal of the evening. It was a dream debut for the 25-year-old, whose move from England was only announced in the morning. Bielefeld had many efforts, but came short of scoring. The Bundesliga 2 will kick off next weekend for Arminia, while Werder play again on Sunday against Dutch Eredivisie club FC Groningen.

Match reaction

Florian Kohfeldt: “I was delighted for Davy. It was a fantastic debut from him. But I’m also pleased in general with the performance. We controlled the game well.”

Davy Klaassen: “It was my first chance to score. The fact that I managed to score on the first attempt feels great. Not everything went perfectly, but I’m happy to be here. After scoring in my first goal, the pressure is of course really high now (laughs). I’m looking forward to the next games.”
