Into the round-of-16! Werder were dominant against fourth-tier side Weiche Flensburg, eventually winning the game 5-1. Flensburg normally play their home games in the Manfred-Werner-Stadion, but floodlight problems mean that the game took place in Lübeck. Pizarro opened the scoring for Werder before the home side scored a surprise equaliser straight from a cross. The Green-Whites then took control of the game, as Kainz and Klaassen added their names to the scoresheet before half time. After the break, the game was less exciting. That was until Martin Harnik entered the fray. The striker scored a brace to make it five for Werder in what was a solid performance in the cup.

Lineup and formation: Head coach Florian Kohfeldt made three changes for the game against Flensburg, with Claudio Pizarro, Johannes Eggestein and Florian Kainz all coming into the side. The Green-Whites lined up in a 4-3-3 formation.

Flensburg fight, but Werder are superior

8 mins: GOOAAALL for Werder! It’s the best possible start, as Claudio Pizarro taps home! Jojo Eggestein played a great ball through to Gebre Selassie, and the right-back is unlucky to hit the post. However, just as he’s been doing for over 20 years, Piza is there to snap up the rebound!

27 mins: The home side equalise. Santos crosses from the left-hand side, the ball avoids everyone and somehow ends up in the back of the net with Pavlenka wrong-footed!

37 mins: Werder back in front! Florian Kainz picks up the ball in a central position, shifts it onto his left foot and unleashes a powerful shot into the corner of the net! He must be trying to rival his effort from the previous round!

44 mins: 3-1! Johannes Eggestein is proving to be a real nuisance for the Flensburg defence this evening and is brought down after a mazy run into the box! Our captain for the night, Davy Klaassen, steps up and powers the ball high into the roof of the net!

45 mins: Half time here, and Werder have a solid lead at the break following two goals late in the half.

Harnik with the brace!

50 mins: Kainz finds the head of Nuri Sahin from a corner, but the midfielder can’t guide his effort on into the goal.

76 mins: Martin Harnik gets in on the act! The Eggestein brothers drive through midfield together before Maxi lays the ball off to Martin Harnik and the forward strokes the ball home!

78 mins: Harnik again! Kainz puts the ball into the mixer and Harnik rises highest to head a fifth for Werder!

90+1 mins: And that’s that! Werder get a commanding victory and advance through to the round-of-16!
